Home Fortress, Road-Starved Hoos: Jennings Still 75 From 10K as No. 24 SMU Hosts Virginia's Best Pass Defense
By Brooke Calloway, RF Sports Radio SMU voice
Pony Up. Saturday morning is still about Kevin Jennings and five digits, but the tape is about something colder: Virginia's secondary against the ACC's loudest passing attack, inside a stadium where ACC visitors have not won since SMU joined the league.
The facts
No. 24 SMU (4-1, 2-1 ACC), also No. 22 in the coaches poll, hosts Virginia (4-2, 2-1 ACC) on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 11 a.m. Central at Gerald J. Ford Stadium on The CW, per Virginia Athletics and SMU. It is a Salute to Service / Stripe Out date. Jennings has 9,925 career total yards and needs 75 to reach 10,000, per CBS Sports. He has thrown for about 1,588 yards and 14 touchdowns in five games, per Virginia media quotes on SI.
Since joining the ACC in 2024, SMU is 9-0 against conference foes at Ford Stadium, and ACC schools are 0-9 in Dallas. Virginia is seeking its first road win of 2026 and its first ranked win of the year. The 2024 meeting was SMU 33-7. The statistical clash is clean: SMU leads the ACC in passing offense (about 341 yards per game) against Virginia's ACC-best pass defense (161.8 yards allowed per game, seven interceptions against four passing touchdowns allowed), per Virginia game notes.
Virginia coach Tony Elliott this week called Jennings the ideal college quarterback — pocket passer, deadly outside the pocket, able to run it the distance — and said disrupting his timing is the staff's focus, per SI. The Cavaliers are roughly 9.5-point underdogs, per DraftKings odds cited by SI.
RF Sports Radio's take (opinion)
My take: the fortress narrative is real, and it is also a trap if SMU plays cute. Nine-and-oh at home in ACC play means Virginia has to invent the first script. That usually means early turnovers or an explosive special-teams swing. Jennings does not need to hunt the milestone. Seventy-five yards will show up on the second or third drive if the Mustangs stay on schedule.
What I want is patience. Virginia's seven interceptions are not random. They force you into contested balls when the pocket breaks. Jennings' dual-threat skill is the answer only if the first read is clean. Take the checkdowns, lean on the run enough to keep safeties honest, and let Ford Stadium do the rest. Virginia's early kickoff routine is also a factor — noon Eastern is their earliest start, and Elliott flagged hydration and acceleration of the day.
My call: Jennings crosses 10,000 in the first quarter, finishes north of 250 passing yards, and SMU wins 34-17. That is a prediction. If Virginia picks him twice, the ranking gets shaky by the fourth quarter.
What to watch next
Kickoff is Saturday at 11 a.m. Central on The CW. Watch the milestone drive, turnover margin, and whether Virginia's pass defense keeps its ACC-best number intact. For yesterday's 75-yards column, read yesterday's SMU post on Jennings chasing 10,000 yards, and get ready on the SMU Football page.
Radio question: is Ford Stadium's ACC home streak the story Saturday, or is it Jennings vs. the best pass defense in the league?
