The Cutdown Clock Is Loud: Powell's Veto Concession Puts Cisse on the Bubble Before Wednesday's Pelicans Game

Image
By Marcus Delaney , RF Sports Radio Mavericks voice Mavs Nation, Kyrie was last week's story. This week's story is the 15th roster spot, and the clock is not slowing down. The facts Marc Stein reported that Dwight Powell has agreed to give up the trade veto his contract carries if he makes the regular-season roster, per WhyNBA. Dallas already has 15 other players on standard contracts , so keeping Powell means a trade or a waiver. The name that keeps coming up is center Moussa Cisse, whose $2.2 million became fully guaranteed after Dallas kept him past Oct. 1. Sports Illustrated's Mavericks coverage notes creating a roster spot for Powell looked unlikely until Dusty May started praising Powell's preseason play, and Powell has been getting backup center minutes. Hoops Rumors' Mavericks notes roundup keeps Irving, Cooper Flagg, de Larrea and Powell in the same conversation as Dallas finishes the exhibition slate. The next games are home against the Pelicans ...

Dwight Powell Gives Up His Trade Veto to Stay a Maverick, and Now Dallas Has a Real Roster Squeeze Before Opening Night

Image
By Marcus Delaney , RF Sports Radio Mavericks voice Mavs Nation, Kyrie Irving's return was Sunday morning's headline. By Sunday night, the most interesting Mavericks story was about the last spot on the roster. The facts Marc Stein reported in his newsletter late Sunday that Dwight Powell has agreed to give up the trade veto his contract carries , as long as he makes the regular-season roster, per WhyNBA. Because Powell re-signed on a one-year deal, league rules would normally let him block any trade this season. Under this arrangement, Dallas could move him after Dec. 25. Powell returned on Sept. 25 on a one-year deal worth about $3.88 million with a partial guarantee, per TalkBasket, and he's entering his 13th season as the franchise's longest-tenured player since Dirk Nowitzki. The problem is math. WhyNBA notes Dallas already has 15 other players on standard contracts , so keeping Powell takes a trade or a waiver. The obvious name is center Moussa Cisse. Dal...

Kyrie Is Back: Irving Scores 17 in 22 Minutes in His First Game Since the ACL Tear as the Mavs Beat Houston 132-115 in Macao

Image
Mavs Nation, if you set an alarm for a 5 a.m. tip, it took Kyrie Irving about 10 seconds to make it worth it. Irving started Sunday in Macao, his first game since he tore his left ACL against Sacramento on March 3, 2025. On the first possession he drove past Jabari Smith Jr. on the baseline for a reverse layup, per Mavs Moneyball's Matt Martinez. He finished with 17 points on 6-of-13 shooting , 2-of-6 from three and 3-of-3 at the line, plus three assists and two rebounds in 22 minutes, per CBS Sports and RotoWire, and he didn't commit a turnover. He had 14 of those points in the first half, then played three minutes of the third quarter and hit another three before heading to the bench. Dallas won 132-115 to split the two-game China series. Dusty May said before the game that the only limit was a minute count. "If I didn't know that he missed last year, I wouldn't be able to tell based on how he's worked in preseason camp," May said, per Dallas Sport...

Dusty May Calls Developing Cooper Flagg a 'Big Responsibility' as Durant Says Kyrie Is 'Anxious and Excited' for Sunday

Image
Mavs Nation, the scoreboard in Macao said Houston 135, Dallas 117. The postgame notebook said more about where this team is headed. Dallas Sports Journal's Grant Afseth, in a story also carried by Yardbarker, had Dusty May talking about Cooper Flagg after Flagg scored 17 of his 19 points in the second quarter and sat the whole second half. "Just to see how competitive he is... when the lights are on he moves differently," May said. "Just to see him in the game, his potential was through the roof." He also spelled out what the job is: " This is a big responsibility to help him on his evolution into being one of the best. " May said Dallas isn't running much offense for Flagg yet and is still learning "the play after the play." The shot chart shows what May wants. Dallas fired 51 threes and was 12-of-41 from deep through three quarters, per DSJ. Houston won the paint 42-34 and second-chance points 25-15, with 10 offensive rebounds in ...

Flagg Drops 19 in One Half as Rockets Beat Kyrie-Less Mavs 135-117 in Macao; Irving Set for Sunday

Image
If you set the alarm for a 7 a.m. preseason tip, Cooper Flagg made it worth your while. The rest of the roster? Still a work in progress. Houston beat Dallas 135-117 Friday morning at The Venetian Arena in Macao in the first of two NBA China Games. Flagg played only the first half and still led the Mavs with 19 points, six rebounds and three assists on 7-of-14 shooting in 19 minutes, per Mavs Moneyball. He was 1-of-5 from three, but SI points out he took five threes in a game only 17 times all of last season. Flagg blocked Amen Thompson at one end and finished an alley-oop at the other early in the second quarter, but the Rockets still led 65-45 at the half and built the lead as high as 23. Houston played its regular starters, and it showed. Tari Eason had a game-high 20, Fred VanVleet scored 17, and Alperen Sengun posted a triple-double with 16 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists, per Yahoo Sports. Dusty May's first lineup had rookie Morez Johnson Jr. at center in his NBA ...

Kyrie in Macao: 'Like a Kid at the Candy Store' as Naji Marshall Breaks a Rim at Practice

Image
Mavs fans, the vibes out of Macao are strong — strong enough to take down a basket. Kyrie Irving spoke after Tuesday's practice in Macao, three days before Friday's preseason opener against Houston at The Venetian Arena, his first game in more than 19 months . "For me personally, it's just getting out of my own way and the mental aspect of it, being back on the floor, putting my uniform back on, hearing my name be called," Irving told Dallas Sports Journal's Grant Afseth. "I do feel like a little kid at the candy store a little bit." He also made clear the rehab "wasn't a solo job." Irving last played March 3, 2025, when he tore his left ACL, and Dallas went 26-56 without him last season. It's the Mavs' first trip to China since 2018 . Irving called Macao "basically like a second home for me now," per NBA.com, while 19-year-old Cooper Flagg said it's his "first time in Asia." Irving's prescriptio...

Mavs Camp: Kyrie Unrestricted as May Builds Toward Macao

Image
Mavs Nation, the ball is bouncing again — and Kyrie Irving is not easing in. After media day remarks that he’s under no physical restrictions following the left ACL tear that cost him roughly 19 months, Irving has been a full participant through the early Dusty May practices. Coach May said availability Day 2 looked basically the same as Day 1, with the staff still managing limited minutes for Santi Aldama (knee recovery) and keeping an eye on other maintenance pieces. This is the Masai Ujiri–Dusty May reboot after last year’s 26-56 slog. Cooper Flagg and Irving are already being framed as the offensive pairing to watch, and May is preaching “mastery shots” — using what guys do best instead of spreadsheet purity. The renovated practice facility is open; the vibes are workmanlike. The Dallas Mavericks (https://rfsportsradio.blogspot.com/search/label/Dallas%20Mavericks) open the preseason against the Houston Rockets in Macao on Oct. 9 (China Games), tip the regular season at Houston on O...

Kyrie Says He's Ready: Mavs Open Camp Under May and Ujiri

Mavs fans, the reboot is real — and Kyrie Irving just put it on blast. At media day and into the first days of training camp, Irving said he has no physical restrictions after the torn ACL in his left knee that cost him about 19 months. His line: he's ready to "kick some butt." This is Year One of Masai Ujiri in the front office and Dusty May on the sideline after last season's 26-56 finish. Reigning Rookie of the Year Cooper Flagg is the centerpiece. Dallas also re-signed longtime big Dwight Powell and opens preseason against Houston in Macao (NBA China Games) starting Oct. 9, with the regular-season opener at Houston on Oct. 21 and home tip vs. San Antonio on Oct. 24. Patience remains the word on Dereck Lively II (foot recovery). The vibe from Ujiri: bring joy back to basketball — and win. Image
Sources: NBA.com media day ; Dallas Sports Journal . — RF Sports Radio Related: Kyrie Says He's Ready · Dallas Mavericks Media day at the AAC set the tone for 2026-27: new coach Dusty May, Kyrie Irving back from a torn left ACL saying he's under no medical restrictions into camp, and Cooper Flagg entering Year 2 after winning Kia Rookie of the Year. Masai Ujiri's message was simple — bring joy back to basketball after a 26-56 season. Flagg said he's now about 6'10" without shoes. Dallas also drafted Morez Johnson Jr. at No. 9, a familiar face from May's Michigan staff. Camp roster churn is real. Dwight Powell is back on a training-camp deal (terms undisclosed), and Dallas Sports Journal reported Seth Lundy joined as a camp invitee to fill out a 20-man group. Neither is locked onto the opening-night 15. Rehab watch: patience with Dereck Lively II after right-foot surgery; Santi Aldama's camp status tied to a right knee scope.
