DREW BREES BENEFITS FROM SAINTS "BOUNTY-GATE"; $100 MILLION DOLLAR DEAL

Drew Brees gets a new deal from the New Orleans Saints that sets new NFL record; $100 million dollar contract with $60 million guaranteed.

After Roger Goddell made his own NFL history with the punishment of the Saints organization do to the "bounty-gate" scandal, the Saints decide to make history of their own by signing their franchise quarterback to  record breaking deal. Drew Brees was very vocal about not starting the season under the franchise tag before the suspensions were levied against the GM, head coach, and players; but the talk got even louder once the hammer came down.

The Saints faced a season of turmoil after the punishment was laid down. Ironically, now a quarterback benefits from the Saints defense targeting to injure quarterbacks. Brees himself was a victim of rough play in the last year of his Chargers contract that led many experts to say he would never play at a high level again. He was damaged goods. It was that reason alone that the Saints were able to take a chance on Drew that paid off with him leading every quarterback passing statistical category over the last 3 years, plus the franchise's first Super Bowl Championship. That injury was the reason Brees knew he could not start this season under a franchise tag.

The poker game between the Saints and Brees took an unfair turn in his favor when Roger Goddell put the mirror behind the Saint's chair. The suspension of the GM, head coach, and assistant head coach left the Saints without any leadership. The deal had to get done at any cost. Is anyone worth $100 million dollars? Probably not since statistics for players receiving max deals show that the hind sight is 20/20 when weighing out the player's performance in the latter years of the deal. Drew could have set-out a few games and would have forced the Saints to rename the Super Dome, but he wanted to get back to his team to give them some leadership. That you can't put a price on.

NFLPA FILES SUIT AGAINST THE NFL FOR SAINTS SUSPENDED PLAYERS

The NFLPA decided to finally do more than just talk. The formally file a lawsuit against the NFL, specifically against Roger Goddell's iron fist. Goddell delivered the biggest punishment ever to the New Orleans Saints for their involvement and cover-up of their alleged bounty program.

Now the public will be able to see the evidence presented to Roger Goddell that warranted such a punishment.

Should Drew Brees Stay With The Saints?

Many would look at the off season for the New Orleans Saints as a sports death march. Not only have they lost a head coach, a GM, staff, and players behind "bounty-gate", but they have yet to lock-up the most important piece to the puzzle Drew Brees. The Saints placed a franchise tag on Brees before the suspensions started to rain down much to the dismay of the former MVP. The last time Brees played under such designation he suffered a career-ending type injury on the last game of the season while a San Diego Charger. Many teams wrote him off after that except for the New Orleans Saints. Drew has been adamant that he will not start the season under a franchise tag; he wants to get paid.

Should he resign with the Saints? The entire bounty program that caused the turmoil was designed to attack quarterbacks. Two of the more high targets, Brett Farve and Kurt Warner, ended their careers to Saints defensive "bounty" hits. Is Brees up to facing the possible retaliation from other defenses that missed out because their quarterback could not continue?

In the back of his mind he has to ponder; do I really know these people? Sean Payton has been suspended for the entire season for his cover-up of the whole bounty program after being warned a year prior. Saints GM Mickey Loomis  will miss the half the season and has more recently been accused of having a device in his suite at the Superdome that would allow him to listen to the opposing team's headset conversations. Owner Tom Benson has not been willing to meet the QB's salary demands, but found over $300 million dollars to purchase the New Orleans Hornets. Brees' only saving grace to stick with the Saints may be the city of New Orleans. He and his wife have become pillars in the community since the devastation of  hurricane Katrina. Saints fans can only hope that Saints management feel the same way.
