Blackout Eve in Waco: 4-1 Baylor Hosts Tumbling TCU With the Revivalry Under the Lights and the Defense Still Flying

Image
By Mac Rivera , RF Sports Radio Baylor voice Bears fans, the blackout is almost here. McLane goes dark, the Revivalry gets loud, and a 4-1 Baylor team that has been living on defense gets a TCU club still searching for its Big 12 footing. The facts Baylor (4-1, 2-0 Big 12) hosts TCU (2-3, 0-2 Big 12) on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 6 p.m. Central on FS1 at McLane Stadium in the Blackout on the Brazos / Revivalry, per BaylorBears.com. Baylor is on a four-game winning streak. TCU Athletics previewed the trip to Waco on Oct. 15 as the latest rendition of the most-played rivalry in Texas. Team materials and recent coverage have framed Baylor's defense as the identity piece — including the streak of holding opponents to 20 or fewer points that carried through the early slate — while DJ Lagway and Gavin Freeman headline the offensive threats. SI's by-the-numbers preview put TCU's offense on notice against Power Four competition, with scoring issues and protection for quarterb...

Image
By Mac Rivera , RF Sports Radio Baylor voice Bears fans, wear black and bring your voice. Baylor's defense is doing something Waco has not seen in decades, and Saturday night it gets a rival that badly needs a win. The facts Baylor (4-1, 2-0 Big 12) hosts TCU (2-3, 0-2 Big 12) on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 6 p.m. Central at McLane Stadium on FS1, in the Revivalry branded Blackout on the Brazos, per BaylorBears.com. The Bears are on a four-game win streak that includes a 55-19 win at Arizona State. According to Baylor's TCU-week game notes, the Bears have held five straight opponents to 20 points or fewer to open the season, a program-history stretch the notes describe as its longest in decades. Baylor is allowing 14.2 points per game , which the notes list as 12th nationally in scoring defense. Quarterback DJ Lagway, a transfer from Florida whose father starred at running back for Baylor in the 1990s, has 860 passing yards and eight touchdowns, per Baylor's game note...

Blackout Clock Is Loud: 4-1 Baylor's Defense Still Has Not Allowed 21, and TCU Visits Saturday With the Revivalry Under the Lights

Image
By Mac Rivera , RF Sports Radio Baylor voice Bears fans, the blackout is not just a T-shirt theme. It is a defensive identity test against a Horned Frogs team that still knows how to spoil a McLane night. The facts Baylor (4-1, 2-0 Big 12) hosts TCU (2-3, 0-2 Big 12) on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 6 p.m. Central at McLane Stadium on FS1 in the rivalry branded Blackout on the Brazos , per BaylorBears.com. Fans are encouraged to wear black. The game notes package for TCU week highlights a defense that has held all five opponents to 20 points or fewer and is allowing about 14.2 points per game, a dramatic improvement from last season's profile, per Baylor game notes and Star-Telegram preview framing. That defensive start — including results against Power conference foes already on the resume — is the reason Waco is talking about more than a midseason rivalry. Rushing defense near 97 yards allowed per game has been part of the same notes package. TCU's own defensive numbers hav...

Image
By Mac Rivera , RF Sports Radio Baylor voice Sic 'em. The blackout is loaded, the rivalry is the most played in Texas, and Baylor's defense has not allowed a 21-spot yet. That is the kind of October stage McLane was built for. The facts Baylor is 4-1 and 2-0 in the Big 12 with a four-game win streak. Baylor Is a 6.5-Point Favorite Over TCU, and Even SI's Baylor Site Is Picking the Upset. Here's Why the Bears Should Cover

Image
By Mac Rivera , RF Sports Radio Baylor voice Sic 'em. Baylor is 4-1, has won four straight and is favored at home in the Revivalry. So why does everybody keep talking about an upset? The facts SI's Baylor site lists the Bears as 6.5-point favorites over TCU , with an over/under of 52.5 and a money line of Baylor -220, TCU +180. Baylor averages 34.8 points a game and has allowed 71 points in five games, 14.2 a game. TCU averages 25.4 and allows just 13.4, 15th-best in FBS. Then the writer, after laying out those numbers, picks TCU to win 24-20 . The reasons: Dave Aranda is 2-4 against TCU, the Frogs are 2-3 and desperate, and the Bears could be overconfident after a 55-19 rout at Arizona State. The piece also notes Baylor lost J. Redding and D. Tezino to season-ending injuries. Baylor's own game notes fill in the picture. The Bears have held all five opponents to 20 points or fewer, the longest such streak to open a season since 1966. They rank No. 4 nationally in t...

Blackout on the Brazos: TCU's Film Study Says Baylor 'Knows Exactly How It Wants to Win' as the Revivalry Comes to Waco

Image
Sic 'em. Both teams were off Saturday, so the Revivalry hype gets a full week. The other side has already been studying the Bears. Baylor (4-1, 2-0 Big 12) hosts TCU (2-3, 0-2) on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 6 p.m. on FS1 at McLane Stadium. The school is calling it "Blackout on the Brazos" and wants fans in black, per BaylorBears.com. The Bears have won four straight since the opening loss to Auburn, including a 23-13 win over Colorado and a 55-19 rout at Arizona State. They've held all five opponents to 20 points or fewer, Baylor's best start that way since 1966, and they're going for a second straight home win over TCU after a 37-34 thriller in 2024. TCU's last game was a 17-10 loss to No. 10 BYU on Oct. 3 in Fort Worth, per BYU Athletics. On SI's TCU site, Jason Phillips, who says he has coached a version of Baylor's defense, broke down the Arizona State film, and his conclusion was blunt: Baylor "looked like a team that knew exactly how i...

From the Hot Seat to 4-1: Baylor's Defense Has 18 Sacks and 10 Takeaways, and Dave Aranda's Outlook Has Changed

Image
Sic 'em. In August, the national conversation about Baylor was Dave Aranda's job. At the bye, it's how good this defense has become. The Baylor Lariat's Carson Vercoe lays out the turnaround. Last season, the Bears allowed 32.6 points and 392 yards a game and finished with 12 sacks. Five games into 2026, they already have 18 sacks, fourth-most in college football , plus 10 takeaways , and they've held every opponent under 20 points. "We got a really good defense," linebacker Ryan Davis said. "I still think the bar is getting raised every single week, and this isn't the final product yet." SI's Jason B. Hirschhorn asked the question directly: has Aranda coached his way off the hot seat? His answer is not yet, but he's close. Aranda went 22-28 in the four years after the 2021 Big 12 title, and before this season he handed defensive play-calling to new coordinator Joe Klanderman. Since a 17-16 loss to Auburn in the opener, Baylor ha...

Five Bears, Five Rushing Touchdowns: Baylor's Backfield by Committee Gives TCU Plenty to Study

Image
Sic 'em. Everybody's talking about DJ Lagway's arm, but the Bears' run game is a big reason this offense is humming. SI's Brad Teague points out that five different Bears have scored rushing touchdowns through five games. Dawson Pendergrass leads the backs with 81 carries, followed by Caden Knighten with 49, Michael Turner with 28 and true freshman Ryelan Morris with 22. Baylor is almost perfectly balanced, with 201 rushing plays and 203 pass attempts. The big plays have come from the guys lower on that list. Morris broke a 63-yard touchdown run in Tempe that put Baylor ahead for good, and Knighten's 75-yard touchdown run made it 45-16 in the second half and sent Arizona State fans to the exits. Quarterback Nate Bennett has a 25-yard touchdown run against Louisiana Tech, and Lagway added an 11-yard score against the Sun Devils. Teague notes Lagway has spent most of the season dealing with a right ankle sprain. Turner hasn't scored yet, but Teague says ...

DJ Lagway Collects Three National Honors as Baylor Hits the Bye With a Defense Allowing 14.2 a Game

Image
Sic 'em. The bye week comes with some hardware. Baylor announced Tuesday that quarterback DJ Lagway earned three national honors for his night at Arizona State: Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award National Player of the Week, a spot in the Davey O'Brien Award's expanded "Davey Double" group of 16 quarterbacks, which also puts him on the O'Brien midseason watch list, and Manning Award Star of the Week. That's on top of Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week. In his third start as a Bear, Lagway went 25-for-40 for 306 yards and a career-high four touchdown passes , and added an 11-yard touchdown run. He's the 11th Bear ever with five or more touchdowns in a game. Baylor's 564 yards were its most since 612 at Oklahoma State on Sept. 27, 2025, and its 55 points are the most by any Big 12 team in a league game this season. The Dallas Morning News' midseason report says the defense is the real story, though. Baylor (4-1, 2-0 Big 12) is allowing 14.2 po...

Baylor at ASU Saturday: Tempe Night Test for Hot Bear Defense

Image
Sic ’em — Tempe under the lights is the next Big 12 measuring stick. Baylor (3-1, 1-0 Big 12) visits Arizona State (2-1) Saturday, Oct. 3 at 9:30 p.m. CT on ESPN at Mountain America Stadium — the Bears’ first trip there since 1990. Baylor’s defense has held four straight opponents under 20 points and sits tied near the national lead with 15 sacks. Keys still center on pressuring junior QB Cutter Boley and getting the run game going again after a quiet carry count in the Colorado win. ASU leads the all-time series 2-0, including last year’s 27-24 walk-off in Waco. Local coverage in the Valley is already framing it as a night the Sun Devils need a cleaner offensive outing at home under Kenny Dillingham. For Baylor Football (https://rfsportsradio.blogspot.com/search/label/Baylor%20Football), the radio question: does the sack party ruin Boley’s night, or does desert air dry up the Bears’ conference start? Baylor’s Tempe Keys: Pressure Boley, Free Lagway, Score Three TDs

Image
Sic ’em listeners — Tempe isn’t a vibes trip. It’s a checklist. Baylor (3-1, 1-0 Big 12) hits Arizona State Saturday, Oct. 3 at 9:30 p.m. CT on ESPN — the Bears’ first visit to Mountain America Stadium since 1990. SI’s keys: pressure junior QB Cutter Boley (736 yards, nine touchdowns, two picks; only four sacks allowed all year), get DJ Lagway running again after just one carry in the Colorado win, and find three offensive touchdowns while a defense that has held four straight foes under 20 keeps cooking. Baylor’s 15 sacks tie for fourth nationally — that edge has to travel. ASU sits 2-1 under Kenny Dillingham and leads the all-time series 2-0, including last year’s 27-24 walk-off in Waco. Roy Philpott, Brock Osweiler, and Sherree Burruss have the ESPN call. For Baylor Football (https://rfsportsradio.blogspot.com/search/label/Baylor%20Football), the radio question: does the sack party ruin Boley’s night, or does Tempe’s desert air dry up the Bears’ Big 12 start?
