"I wish Caron, JJ, Tyson...and D Steve were with us" says Dirk Nowitzki

Today the Dallas Mavericks meet President Obama at the White House. Dirk took to twitter to expresses his thoughts on his missing championship teammates.

@Swish41 "I wish caron, jj, tyson, caron and d steve were with us."

One new Mav will not be able to go to the White House due to his criminal past. DC native Delonte West was banned from meeting the President after the his White House background check.

Mavs Open Short Training Camp a Much Different Team

Arriving at the Mavs first official practice today one could easily assume that this team never won a title. A small group of media people  that were all locally based, no ESPN talking heads, and only 10 basketball players made what should be a huge moment for a franchise with it's first Championship seem normal. Other than Shawn Marion's choice of hair color, the most eye catching issue were the players in attendance. Or the lack of players in attendance. During Coach Carlisle's q and a we learned that Brandon Hayward would be the starting center for the reigning champs. Sounds good on the surface until you realize that Tyson Chandler, the best center in Mavs history, is not on this team. He joins the NY Knicks frontcourt that Jason Kidd pointed out is the same the frontcourt that qualified the USA for the Olympics. Ian Mahinmi will be Hayward's back up for now. J.J. Barea, Deshawn Stevenson, Brian Cardinal, Caron Butler and Peja were all missing as well. So much for the deepest team in terms of talent in the league.

Now a team that many thought was one of the oldest in the NBA will have to rely on their youngest players to repeat. A soon as practice was over, the only players that stayed behind for position work were Dominique Jones, Robrique Beaubois, Ian Mahinmi, Cory Brewer, and newest Mav Brandan Wright. Wright worked specifically with Coach Carlisle. The veterans had all the right answers to the missing teammate questions. After all, if you have been in the league for more than 5 years your pretty much numb to trades and free agency moves. The young Mavs know that the weight is on their shoulders. The biggest question is who will start at the 2 position. Carlisle made it clear that Terry will continue to be the 6th man. Most believe that Dominque Jones or Roddy Beaubois will split that time once occupied by Deshawn Stevenson. Talking with Jason Kidd, heading into his 18th season, he thinks that by definition of the position that Jones is more of a 1 and Roddy a 2. Mark Cuban has several moves to make to fill out this roster and only 16 days until tip-off at home against their only true rival, the Miami Heat.

Big Trouble in Big D; Caron Butler out for the season, Dirk missed his 5th straight game

Today Caron Butler had season ending surgery to repair a torn patellar tendon in his knee. His last full game with the team he hit 30pts in a loss to the Spurs at home. On the road against the Milwaukee Bucks you can hear him screaming in pain when he hit the knee in the first quarter. You knew then, it was not gonna be good.
Dirk missed his 5th straight game tonight against the Portland Trailblazers, a win by the way. But they have Oklahoma City and Orlando coming up, so will they rush Dirk back? The "Big German" has been a quick healer. The Mavs are only 3 games ahead of the Lakers and Utah right now. The biggest concern has to be falling further behind the Spurs in the division and the conference.
Who will step up now? That is the million dollar question for this team. Deshawn Stevenson had 21pts against the Cavaliers and 18pts tonight. JJ Barea hit 29pts in the loss to the Bucks. Tyson Chandler has back-to-back double doubles in rebounds and points. Jet Terry has been a 4th quarter savior in previous games, but is still inconsistent as a 2nd scoring option. Roddy B has not step a foot on the AAC floor this season and the rookie Jones unproven. This team needs a certified second option. The collective effort is good to make the playoffs, but once there, teams will again focus on Dirk and dare the team to beat them. A strategy that has worked the last 3 seasons.
Is a trade the only option? If Mark Cuban loves anything, he loves the Mavs. Say what you will, but no other owner will "spend-to-win" with no disregard for his personal finances the way Cuban does. The trade is inevitable. Mark has to be on the phone with Denver right? How attractive does Carmelo look now? Every player outside of Nowitzki, Kidd, and Chandler has to be on the table. Caron's contract is up at the end of the season, Kidd is not getting any younger, and Dirk keeps reminding us he is here for only 4 more seasons. The time to trade is now.
The Mavs were our #1 ranked team in our power rankings before the injury bugs infested the locker room. The team was starting to really gel has a title contender beating good teams like Miami twice, San Antonio, Denver, New Orleans, and even Boston. You could take a wait-and-see approach, but why? If the trade is out there...make it.

Caron Butler could be out for the season; ESPNDallas.com Reporting

After going out in the first quarter, Mavs fans knew Caron's return did not look good. ESPNDallas.com reporter Tim MacMahon is reporting that Butler could be out the rest of season or at best 2 months. It could be a slight tear of the patellar tendon or full tear.
Dirk is still listed day-to-day with his sore knee and has missed 3 straight games, all loses. Shawn Marion did not play last night due to a thigh contusion and is still probable.

Shawn Marion has 14 and Caron Butler has 13 to lead all scorers. The Nets have no players in double figures in any statistical category. Devin did return late in the 2nd qtr, but with a heavily wrapped shoulder. Jason Kidd ends the second half with 3pt shot with .03 left.

Dallas Mavs vs Chicago Bulls (PreGame Report) (Starting Lineups)

Tonight the 7-3 Mavs take on the 6-4 Chicago Bulls. The Mavs are trying to bounce back from a tough loss to the New Orleans Hornets Wednesday night. The have played the Bulls twice in the preseason and won both. Guarding the point guard doesn't get any easier tonight with Derrick Rose in town. During the pre-game press conference Coach Carlisle mentioned his "electric presence on the court" and how his "skill level keeps moving up". Coach also talked about Joakim Noah and his ability to get clean-up points off offensive rebounds. Tyson Chandler and Derrick Rose were teammates this summer during the FIBA World Championships winning gold. This will be the Mavs first nationally televised game of this season and you can tell. ESPN has cameras everywhere from catching the players exiting vehicles to with us in the press box. Caron Butler has is second start after coming back from injury tonight after a lack-luster performance in the Big Easy. You can't help but to wonder how he will play tonight with all the trade talk with Carmelo floating around...Stay Tuned
