75 Yards From History: Kevin Jennings Chases 10,000 Career Yards as No. 24 SMU Meets Virginia's ACC-Best Pass Defense
By Brooke Calloway, RF Sports Radio SMU voice
Pony Up. Sometime late Saturday morning at Gerald J. Ford Stadium, Kevin Jennings is likely to cross a five-digit career milestone. The bigger question is whether he does it against the stingiest pass defense in the ACC.
The facts
Jennings has 9,925 career total yards and needs 75 more to reach 10,000, per CBS Sports. He already holds SMU school records for passing yards (9,297), completions (742) and touchdowns responsible for (81). He ranks third in FBS in passing yards per game at 317.6.
No. 24 SMU (4-1, 2-1 ACC), also No. 22 in the coaches poll, hosts Virginia on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 11 a.m. Central at Ford Stadium on The CW, per SMU Athletics. It is a Salute to Service and Stripe Out game. The Mustangs are 3-0 at home. Virginia is 4-2 and 2-1 in ACC play, but 0-2 away from home this season. SMU won the 2024 meeting 33-7.
The matchup problem is real. Virginia allows an ACC-low 161.8 passing yards per game and has intercepted seven passes while allowing four passing touchdowns, per CBS Sports. SMU released its depth chart for the Virginia game on Oct. 15, per On3.
RF Sports Radio's take (opinion)
My take: the milestone is cool, and it will happen, probably early. Seventy-five yards is a couple of good drives for a quarterback averaging more than 300 through the air. What I care about is the other number. Seven interceptions against four touchdowns allowed tells you Virginia's secondary does not just keep receivers in front of it. It takes the ball away. That is the one thing that has turned SMU's comfortable home dates into stress tests this season.
So the game plan should look boring on paper. Take the easy throws, let the run game keep Virginia's safeties honest, and do not force the deep shot just because the record book is waiting. Jennings has thrown for enough yards to know the 10,000 will come on its own. A Virginia team that is 0-2 on the road needs an early turnover to believe. Do not hand it one.
My call: Jennings reaches 10,000 career total yards in the first quarter, finishes with more than 275 passing yards against the ACC's best pass defense, and SMU wins 31-20 to stay ranked. That is a prediction. If Virginia picks him off twice, this becomes a one-score game in the fourth quarter and the ranking feels fragile again.
What to watch next
Kickoff is Saturday at 11 a.m. Central on The CW. Watch the milestone drive, turnover margin, and whether Virginia's secondary can keep its ACC-best passing number intact against a quarterback who ranks third in FBS in passing yards per game. Radio question: where does Kevin Jennings rank among the best quarterbacks you have watched on the Hilltop, and does 10,000 yards settle the debate?
