Finals Eve: Valkyries Host Dream in Game 1 Tomorrow, Two Franchises Still Chasing a First Title, and Defense Sets the Tone
By Danielle "Dee" Ortiz, RF Sports Radio WNBA Playoffs voice
WNBA fans, the wait is almost over. Tomorrow afternoon in San Francisco, two franchises that have never raised a championship trophy tip off a best-of-seven that has been sold all week as a defensive heavyweight fight.
The facts
Game 1 of the 2026 WNBA Finals is Saturday, Oct. 17, at Chase Center, with tip at 3:30 p.m. Eastern / 2:30 p.m. Central on NBC and Peacock, per WNBA.com and team previews. The Golden State Valkyries (No. 2 seed) host the Atlanta Dream (No. 4 seed) in a 2-2-1-1-1 format. Both clubs are chasing the first title in franchise history.
Preview coverage from WNBA.com, ESPN and CBS Sports frames the series around elite defenses, the Angel Reese versus Gabby Williams matchup thread, Golden State's depth and home-court edge, and Atlanta's long winning streak into the Finals. Golden State swept the regular-season series 3-0, but October has rewritten plenty of regular-season scripts already. There is no Dallas Wings on-court angle in this Finals.
RF Sports Radio's take (opinion)
My take: Finals Eve is when narratives get loud and the ball still has not been tipped. The defensive branding is earned. Both of these teams climbed here by making opponents uncomfortable, not by running track meets. That usually means Game 1 is ugly, physical and decided by who survives the first 12 minutes without fouling out of their own identity. From a Dallas couch, this is the series you watch for pace and toughness more than for highlight dunks.
Home court at Chase matters, especially for a Valkyries group that has owned this building's October energy. Atlanta's streak into the Finals matters more. A team that has been winning for weeks does not care that it was the No. 4 seed on paper. Reese's defensive presence is the chaos agent; Williams and Golden State's depth are the counter. I am less interested in the regular-season sweep than in who can get a clean paint touch in the first quarter. Whichever side scores 20 in the paint in Game 1 probably dictates how long this series lasts.
My call: Valkyries take Game 1 by single digits in a half-court grind, and the series stays physical through Game 3 in Atlanta. That is a prediction, not a report. If Atlanta steals Game 1 on the road, the entire seeding story flips overnight.
What to watch next
Tip is Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Central on NBC and Peacock. Watch early foul trouble, paint touches, and whether Atlanta's streak energy survives the Chase crowd. For yesterday's defense-wins column, read yesterday's WNBA column on defense winning championships, and follow the WNBA Playoffs page.
Radio question: are you buying Golden State's home-court edge in Game 1, or is Atlanta's winning streak the louder story heading into Chase Center?
