Defense Wins Championships, Literally: Valkyries and Dream Open a Stops-First WNBA Finals Saturday at Chase Center

RF Sports Radio branded title card with basketball icon: WNBA Finals Game 1 Saturday is a defensive showdown

By Danielle "Dee" Ortiz, RF Sports Radio WNBA Playoffs voice

WNBA fans, if you like 100-point track meets, this might not be your Finals. If you like every possession feeling like a fistfight, pull up a chair Saturday afternoon.

The facts

The WNBA Finals between the Golden State Valkyries and the Atlanta Dream open Saturday, Oct. 17, at 3:30 p.m. Eastern / 2:30 p.m. Central at Chase Center in San Francisco on NBC and Peacock, per ESPN's playoff schedule. The series is best-of-seven in a 2-2-1-1-1 format. Golden State is the No. 2 seed and Atlanta the No. 4 seed. Both franchises are chasing their first WNBA title.

The defensive storyline is the headline in Finals previews from Yahoo Sports and USA TODAY. The Valkyries had the league's best regular-season defensive rating, and the Dream have had the best defensive rating of the postseason. Angel Reese's Defensive Player of the Year award is part of that same defense-first conversation.

Venue logistics are settled after this week's change: Games 3 and 4 move to State Farm Arena in Atlanta, announced Oct. 13, while Game 6, if needed, remains at Gateway Center Arena, per the AJC's Finals coverage. Dallas has no club in this Finals; the Wings angle is spectating.

RF Sports Radio's take (opinion)

My take: this is the Finals the league should be proud of, even if the scores look low. Two franchises without a title, two different paths, and a matchup between the best regular-season defense and the best postseason defense. That is not a boring series. It is a chess match where every turnover is a swing and every made three feels like a small earthquake.

The key to Game 1 is pace. Golden State wants to play in the half court in front of its own crowd and make Atlanta grind for every look. Atlanta's postseason defense has been suffocating, but the Dream are on the road to start and need to steal one in San Francisco before the series moves to State Farm. Whoever wins the free-throw and turnover battles on Saturday will set the tone for the entire series, because neither defense is going to give up easy points in transition.

My call: Valkyries win Game 1 in a game where neither team scores 80, and Golden State takes the series in six. Atlanta's crowd at State Farm Arena steals at least one of Games 3 or 4. That is a prediction, not a report. If Atlanta takes Game 1, I am flipping to the Dream, because a road split against this Valkyries defense would be a statement.

What to watch next

Tip-off is Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Central on NBC and Peacock from Chase Center. Watch turnovers, free throws and first-quarter pace. For Wednesday's venue-change column, read our Wednesday Finals column on Games 3 and 4 moving to State Farm Arena, and follow the WNBA Playoffs page.

Radio question: in a Finals built on defense, are you taking the Valkyries' regular-season résumé or the Dream's postseason form?
