Lottery Is Nine Days Away and the Wings Are Watching From Outside: Dallas's Winter Is About Roster Math

By Danielle "Dee" Ortiz, RF Sports Radio WNBA voice
Wings fans, the lottery stage is set and Dallas does not have a seat at the ping-pong table. That is the good news from a playoff season. It is also the reminder that this winter is about roster construction, not tank-math theater.
The facts
The WNBA announced that the 2027 Draft Lottery will air Sunday, Nov. 15, from 7:30 to 8:00 p.m. ET on ESPN, per the official NBA Communications release. Lottery participants are Houston, Los Angeles, Portland, Seattle, Toronto and Washington, with Los Angeles also holding Phoenix's chances via trade. Houston and Toronto share the most combinations at 329 each. Dallas is not listed among the lottery teams because the Wings made the 2026 playoffs.
That leaves Dallas in the familiar offseason lane: decide what you are building around, what you are trading, and what you are paying. Media speculation earlier this month floated Jessica Shepard as a sell-high trade candidate after an All-Star, MIP-level 2026, while Awak Kuier's restricted free agency remains a priority thread in The IX and Swish Appeal coverage. Those are speculation items, not completed deals. The Golden State Valkyries won the 2026 title in Game 7 on Oct. 31, closing the championship board.
For Wings fans, the practical calendar is clear. Lottery night will reshuffle the top of the draft for other franchises. Dallas's first-round business will sit outside that drawing and inside the front office's own board.
Nationally, Houston and Toronto owning the top lottery odds will dominate the Nov. 15 show. Locally, that broadcast is still appointment viewing for Wings fans who need to know which young stars become trade chips around the league. Scouting the lottery board is part of competing. So is telling your own fan base what the 2027 identity is before free agency gets loud.
RF Sports Radio's take (opinion)
My take: missing the lottery is a compliment you earned in the spring. Do not waste the winter congratulating yourselves for it. The Wings still have hard roster math.
If Shepard is truly in trade talks, Dallas needs a return that helps now, not a future pick that becomes somebody else's problem. If Kuier is the priority, pay her like one. Standing pat without a plan is how playoff teams become lottery teams the next time around.
Opinion: treat Nov. 15 as a scouting night, not a franchise night. Your franchise night is whenever Chris and the front office decide who is untouchable.
What to watch next
Watch Nov. 15 lottery fallout for trade-up chatter, and any Wings statement on Shepard or Kuier. For Thursday's lottery-clock column, read our Nov. 5 lottery-clock column, and follow the winter on our WNBA Playoffs page.
Radio question: with Dallas outside the lottery, should the Wings stand pat on Shepard or explore a real trade that upgrades the supporting cast?
