Rangers Offseason Reality: Payroll Blame, Health Mandate, Lockout Clock

Arlington, the offseason isn’t just a slogan board anymore — it’s a money fight with a calendar attached.

Dallas Morning News insider Evan Grant, on Wednesday’s Rangers Q&A, split the blame for the third straight October miss two ways: owner Ray Davis for a top-heavy roster built to spend, then a payroll slash that left Chris Young without flexibility, and the players who didn’t meet big-league standards. Texas is already on the hook for about $69.5 million combined for Jacob deGrom and Corey Seager in 2027 while Davis keeps the checkbook tight.

Young’s Monday end-of-year message still rings: address health, reliability, and dependability after 34 injured-list stints — tied for most in the AL West — with Seager and Wyatt Langford starting together only 76 times. Layer on a Dec. 1 CBA expiration and a real lockout risk, and free-agency timing gets ugly fast.

For the Texas Rangers (https://rfsportsradio.blogspot.com/search/label/Texas%20Rangers), the radio question: can Young build a playoff roster when the owner’s appetite and the CBA clock both say wait?
