Parker on the Sideline, Pettine in the Booth: Overshown Limited, Durant Unlikely, and Lambeau Still the Grade

RF Sports Radio branded title card with Cowboys star logo: Parker sideline and Pettine booth before Lambeau

By Jake "Star" Whitfield, RF Sports Radio Cowboys voice

Cowboys Nation, the players-only meeting got the headlines yesterday. This morning the coaching tree got rearranged on the radio, and the injury report got a little clearer. Lambeau still grades all of it.

The facts

Speaking Friday morning on 105.3 The Fan, Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said defensive coordinator Christian Parker will coach from the sidelines and new senior defensive assistant Mike Pettine will work from the coaches booth, per DallasCowboys.com's Oct. 16 updates. Schottenheimer also said Pettine will report directly to him, not to Parker. Pettine has spent recent practice windows watching film to catch up rather than standing on the field.

On Thursday's injury report, linebacker DeMarvion Overshown (hamstring) was upgraded from did-not-participate Wednesday to limited participation. Cornerback Cobie Durant (hamstring) did not practice for a second straight day, and DallasCowboys.com noted his return Sunday night against Green Bay looks unlikely. Cornerback Joey Porter Jr. (ankle) was upgraded to full participation, Ameer Speed (knee) went from DNP to limited, and Von Miller (rest) was full after a Wednesday rest day. CeeDee Lamb (thigh) and Tyler Guyton (back) remained full participants, per the Packers' and Cowboys' joint injury report posted Oct. 15.

Dallas is 2-3 and visits the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, Oct. 18, at 7:20 p.m. Central on NBC at Lambeau Field. Overshown, who has missed the last four games with the hamstring, said earlier this week he feels better and is hopeful about Sunday, while acknowledging hamstrings can turn on you, per DallasCowboys.com.

RF Sports Radio's take (opinion)

My take: the booth debate is finally answered, and the answer is the sensible one. Parker stays on the grass where he can talk to the green-dot linebacker between series. Pettine gets the big-picture view upstairs and a direct line to the head coach. That is how you use a veteran hire without turning the first-year coordinator into a figurehead. The players-only meeting after 241 rushing yards still matters, but structure without healthy bodies is just a flowchart.

Overshown's upgrade to limited is the first real green light of the week. It is not a guarantee. Limited Thursday does not equal 60 snaps Sunday. Durant's second straight DNP is the colder truth: if the secondary is still short a corner, Green Bay will attack that side early. Porter being full is the best secondary news Dallas has had since the illness wave.

My call: Overshown is active but on a snap count, Durant is out, Porter plays a full share, and the Cowboys hold Green Bay under 130 rushing yards but still lose a one-score game. Packers 23, Cowboys 20. That is a prediction, not a report. If Overshown logs more than 40 snaps and the run fits look cleaned up, I flip it to a road upset.

What to watch next

Watch Friday's final injury report for Overshown, Durant and Speed, then Sunday night snap counts and whether Pettine's booth suggestions show up in the run-fit calls. Kickoff is Sunday at 7:20 p.m. Central on NBC. Catch up on yesterday's Cowboys post on the players-only meeting after 241 rushing yards, and follow every update on the Dallas Cowboys page.

Radio question: does Parker on the sideline and Pettine upstairs calm you down about this defense, or do you need Overshown healthy and the run fits fixed at Lambeau before you buy it?
