Friday at Crowley ISD Multipurpose Stadium: No. 1 North Crowley Puts a 6-0 Start on the Line Against 4-2 Lake Ridge
By Coach Terrence Booker, RF Sports Radio DFW high school football voice
DFW Friday night people, the week of talk is almost over. North Crowley has worn No. 1 since the new rankings dropped earlier this week. Tomorrow night, the Panthers find out what that number feels like with a district opponent on the other sideline.
The facts
North Crowley is No. 1 in Class 6A in the Dave Campbell's Texas Football rankings and is 6-0, per DCTF and AP coverage from earlier this week. The Panthers climbed to the top spot after a 42-17 road win at Waxahachie on Oct. 9.
North Crowley hosts Lake Ridge on Friday, Oct. 16, at 7 p.m. at Crowley ISD Multipurpose Stadium, with tickets sold through GoFan. Lake Ridge comes in at 4-2. The game is part of the UIL Week 8 slate highlighted in MaxPreps' statewide schedule and rankings roundup. After Friday, North Crowley's schedule continues with a trip to Skyline on Oct. 22, per the MaxPreps schedule we referenced earlier this week.
RF Sports Radio's take (opinion)
My take: this is the week a No. 1 team proves it can handle being hunted. Everything about Waxahachie was a statement game: road crowd, ranked opponent, a 25-point margin that moved the poll. Lake Ridge is a different test. At 4-2, Lake Ridge is good enough to make you pay for a slow start and not intimidating enough to make your kids lock in from the first snap on their own. That is a coaching week. That is where a staff earns its rings.
Plenty of teams across the Metroplex have jumped to No. 1 in October and then play tight at home in front of a crowd that expects a blowout. The fix is simple to say and hard to do. Win first down. Do not turn it over in your own territory. Make the opponent drive the length of the field. North Crowley has the athletes to win this game comfortably if it plays clean football. It does not need to prove anything to the poll voters Friday. It just needs to look like the same team that went into Waxahachie and took over.
Lake Ridge's path is the same as every underdog's on a Friday night: one or two explosive plays, an early takeaway, and a crowd that gets quiet. Four wins say Lake Ridge can play. Six wins and a No. 1 ranking say North Crowley has been better.
My call: North Crowley 35, Lake Ridge 17. The Panthers stay unbeaten and stay No. 1 heading into Skyline week. That is a prediction. If North Crowley turns it over twice in the first half, Lake Ridge turns this into a one-score fourth quarter and the whole state notices.
What to watch next
Kickoff is Friday at 7 p.m. at Crowley ISD Multipurpose Stadium. Get tickets through GoFan, get there early, and watch early turnovers and first-down success. Radio question: is Lake Ridge a trap game for No. 1 North Crowley, or is this a chance for the Panthers to send another statement across the state?
