Corey Seager Has a Bone Spur Removed From His Throwing Elbow; Danny Jansen Has Hand Procedure and Josh Jung Avoids Surgery
Rangers fans, the first real news of the offseason is medical, and most of it is the good kind.
The club announced Friday that Corey Seager had surgery Tuesday to remove a bone spur from his right elbow, his throwing elbow, MLB.com's Brian Murphy reports. He's expected to make a full recovery in time to start his normal offseason work. Chris Young said on Sept. 28 that Seager had dealt with the spur "for a few months" and that minor surgery might be needed. Seager never went on the injured list for the elbow. His two IL stints this year were for low back inflammation, and he also spent time on the seven-day concussion IL in June.
It helps explain a down year. The 32-year-old played 102 games and set career lows in batting average (.227) and OPS (.736), per MLB.com. SI's Matt Postins has his line at .227/.312/.424 with 20 homers and 51 RBI. Postins also points out that Seager has five years left on his 10-year, $325 million deal and now has 10-and-5 rights, which gives him a full no-trade clause. If you were hoping Texas would move him this winter, that's a big hurdle.
Catcher Danny Jansen had a procedure Wednesday to remove a bone growth in his right hand. MLB Trade Rumors notes that's separate from the right forearm strain that cost him more than two months this summer. Jansen hit .203 with eight homers in 67 games. Third baseman Josh Jung got the best news of the three. The right-hand fracture he suffered when he was hit by a pitch on Sept. 25 won't need surgery. It's the same hand he had two surgeries on in 2025, per SI. Jung had the best slash line of his career this year at .299/.365/.462 with 12 homers and 42 RBI, even after missing more than a month with a calf strain. MLBTR says all three are expected to be ready for spring training.
Why move this fast? SI notes baseball is bracing for a possible lockout if a new collective bargaining agreement isn't reached by Dec. 1, so getting procedures done now keeps the recovery clock clean no matter what happens with labor talks.
Follow the Texas Rangers all winter. Radio question: does a cleaned-up elbow make you believe Seager bounces back in 2027?
