Victory Green looks sharp before the real drop — Dallas just finished preseason undefeated.

The Stars closed the exhibition slate 4-0-0, allowing just three goals across four games, capped by a 2-1 win over Minnesota. Defense-first identity? Still the franchise DNA. Regular season opens Friday, Oct. 2 vs. St. Louis at American Airlines Center (8 p.m.).

Cap chess got real this weekend: Remi Poirier was claimed off waivers by New Jersey after a preseason shutout look, and Colin Blackwell was placed on waivers as Dallas tries to fit a healthy group under the ceiling. Sam Steel's four-year extension (AAV about $3.7M starting next season) locks in a versatile PK piece GM Jim Nill called a valuable asset.

Healthy Tyler Seguin and Matt Duchene for opening night would be a big green light. Depth in net for AHL Texas just got thinner — that's the tradeoff.

Lamar Odom: Flesh and Blood

by Matt Silverston Say what you want about Lamar Odom, and go ahead and criticize his lifestyle and the choices he's made, but I will never hesitate to stand up for those human beings who suffer from addiction and mental illness. Given that Odom's story as well as his whereabouts are uncertain and up-in-the-air at this time, the biggest issue at stake here is so much more than money, a reality TV drama, or a basketball hoop. His future livelihood as a healthy, spirited human being is under attack and in immediate jeopardy.
