Barbershop Talk.. Super Bowl XXII and Super Bowl 50
by Da`Vince “Dino” Wright
I was getting a haircut at my cousins barbershop the other day and all they wanted to talk about was the Super Bowl and the turn out. Reg “The Body” said, “That Cam Newton was good but was too green to win the big one”. Derek added, “Peyton Manning will go out on top of the mountain like he should”. This old man pouring coffee turned and said, “ History is bound to repeat itself”. The shop got quiet and The Body asked, “What do you mean Mr. Smith?” While pouring sugar and adding his creamer, Mr. Smith explained his statement. “Super Bowl XXII”. January 31, 1988 in Jack Murphy Stadium in San Diego, California.
The Washington Redskins led by a dynamic black quarterback beat the Denver Broncos 42-10. The Super Bowl MVP was Doug Williams. Denver was favored by 3.5 points. After John Elway and the Broncos went up 10 points in the 1st quarter. The Redskins scored the next 35 points. He explained the intricate parts of every phase of the game. He talked about special teams and how important return punts and kick offs gave the offensive team an edge. He spoke about the similarities between John Elway and Peyton Manning at this juncture of their careers. But then he dissected Cam Newton and Doug Williams. Both sets of QB`s mirror certain phases, but not on the head as one would say. But the quarterbacks are so important. This Super Bowl will be based on both defenses. It`s not the Cam versus Peyton match up that everyone is making this out to be. Mr. Smith gave us a history lesson talking about the key players, running game and key defensive stand made by both teams. The Redskins changed the dynamics of the game by playing defense which made the offense click. Chose your side and cheer for your team. The defense will be the catalyst for the winner of the Super Bowl.
