Official Statement on Southern, Texas Southern Women’s Basketball Altercation
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Southwestern Athletic Conference has identified 15 student-athletes who violated the 2014-15 NCAA Women’s Basketball Rules in the altercation between Southern University and Texas Southern University on Saturday, March 7 in Houston, Texas.
Per NCAA playing rules, seven Southern and eight Texas Southern women’s basketball student-athletes will be suspended for their team’s quarterfinal game of the 2015 SWAC basketball tournament. Two student-athletes, Keonia Parrish from Southern and Kiana Vines from Texas Southern, will serve an additional game suspension.
As a result of the altercation and the lack of available student-athletes to continue, the game was ended with 12:37 remaining in the second half. Since less than 30 minutes of the contest was completed, none of the statistical information from the game will be recorded. After reviewing the ruling, the Conference office determined that both team’s records will reflect a loss. As a result, Texas Southern, with a conference record of 16-2, took sole possession of the SWAC regular season title. Southern moved to second place at 15-3 in the league.
Below is a list of the suspended student-athletes.
