Robinson Cano and Jay-Z |
The internet went nuts when reports surfaced that Robinson Cano wanted a 10 year deal worth $305 million. Yeah, he wanted the South Beach area code from any MLB team that would listen.
They say aim high and that’s what Cano and Roc Nation did. A lot of people bashed him and Roc Nation’s figurehead Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter for the original demands, but everybody even them knew the amount of $305 million would never become a reality.
For a second basemen it is hard to get premium reward for your services and with how the other 8 plus year deals looking like mistakes a lot of people didn’t think Cano would get over a 7 year deal especially when you state the fact that he is 31 years old, which isn’t old but it is when you think in the term of giving somebody a 10 year contract.
Casting the net out early at a ridiculous about came back to be a success for Cano and crew as he was signed to the Seattle Mariners at 10 years $240 million. Nobody thought he would get a 10 year deal and some didn’t think he would get over $200 million. Who knows if Cano will be different from Pujols, Votto, Fielder, Rodriquez and whoever else you can think of that got a $200 million deal, but what we do know is that Cano’s gamble to roll with Roc Nation seems to be paying off and in a big way.
