A Cowboys/49ers Game Recap

I am writing this article midway through the third quarter where, yet again, Tony Romo has provided an inaccurate, lackluster and just downright poor performance in the regular season opener at home to San Francisco.

During the abysmal first half of the contest, the Cowboys quarterback threw not one, not two, but three picks against an injury-stricken 49ers defence. This is simply not good enough. With a quarterback like Romo, is it any wonder just why Dallas have gone 8-8 in the past three seasons? Not for me. There is no doubt that Romo is a good quarterback, but he certainly is not a great one.
To be fair to Romo, the Dallas defence is atrocious. Quarterbacks are often blamed for team losses and although the performance of Romo is certainly a huge factor in the poor performance of the Cowboys, the worst-defence in the league in 2013 have done him no favours in maintaining a close contest. The 49ers found it far too easy to dissect the Cowboys defence, particularly in the passing game, and scored at ease during the first half.
DeMarco Murray carried the Cowboys during this game tonight in a fixture where Dez Bryant and Jason Witten have failed to connect with Romo for a considerable impact on the game. Other than one huge play down the field to Harris, I cannot remember Romo connecting with any of his offensive players for serious yardage.
Romo has good targets, but he fails when the time matters most as he seems to crack under pressure far too easily for a franchise quarterback. If I was a Cowboys fan, I’d be very close to losing my patience with Romo completely.
If Jerry Jones had Johnny Football down on his draft notes back in May, expect him to have a few more quarterback names down on that sheet in the 2015 draft. A replacement quarterback could be the first addition in a long-process of improving the Cowboys into a side that can compete into the post-season in the future.
