Courtesy: Charles Smith View Photo Courtesy Charles Smith Jackson State dismisses football head coach Harold Jackson Courtesy SWAC.org Tue, October 06, 2015 Jackson State University has relieved football head coach Harold Jackson and placed wide receivers coach Derrick McCall as interim head coach effective immediately. H. Jackson went 5-7 in 2014 which was his first season.  The Tigers are currently 1-4 through five games so far in 2015. A Hattiesburg native and former JSU wide receiver, Jackson played in the NFL from 1968 to 1983. He served as an NFL assistant coach for the New England Patriots and New Orleans Saints. He landed his first head coaching job at Benedict College for one season, and followed up as a wide receivers coach at Kentucky (2001 to 2002) and Baylor (2003 to 2006). In January of 2014, Jackson, 68, replaced Rick Comegy, who had been fired the previous December. Comegy is now the head coach at Mississippi Valley State. Jackson’s replacement, McCall was the Tigers' offensive coordinator during the 2012 and 2013 seasons and served as receivers coach in 2008 and 2009. Prior to coaching at JSU, McCall served as the associate head coach and offensive coordinator at Shaw University, where he helped lead the Bears to a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship and a NCAA Division II playoff berth in just two seasons. He also served as interim head coach at Tuskegee University where he led the Tigers to a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and a Pioneer Bowl Championship. McCall had a successful collegiate career as a quarterback at Jackson State (1979-82) as he helped lead the Tigers to two Southwestern Athletic Conference titles and a pair NCAA Division I-AA playoff berths.
