As the the NBA trade deadline approaches, rumors involving the Dallas Mavericks ambitions to trade dominated much of the talk among media members during All-Star weekend in Houston. Mark Cuban was even approached by Maverick fans
on the street asking, "Are you going to make a trade?"
His reply, "We will see".
Sources have told us that the Mavericks offered everyone not named Dirk to Atlanta in the hopes to acquire Josh Smith, but could not get a deal done. They have been in contact with the Milwaukee Bucks about Brandon Jennings and Monte Ellis also with nothing coming to fruition.
If the Mavs do not make the playoffs it will not be because of the surrounding cast of free agents, but because of the lead star Dirk Nowitzki. He is just not playing up to his MVP/Championship level that fans have become spoiled by.
What should the Mavs do? Nothing. Cuban started this process of becoming "the" destination for top talent in the league. If anyone wants a max deal and deserves one, then there are only a few locations for him to go. Dallas is arguably the best spot.
Maverick fans that have remained loyal to the franchise during this down season deserve a legitimate superstar. Someone that can carry the torch after Dirk retires, not someone that we have to hope signs long-term with the franchise after they miss the playoffs. What top talent wants to get traded to a team that doesn't make it to the post season?
The offseason will bring the Mavs more options to reform their roster. The same players available now by trade will still be available plus Dwight Howard. Mavs fan's deserve more than a half-season trade for the sake of making one.
