This hire has been confirmed by the team itself , The Denver Post reported.
Their is history tied between Philips and new head coach Gary Kubiak as they coached together in Houston for 2011-2013 ad had great success during that period. Philips raised the level of play by that Texans defense, so much so that they became a forced to be wrecked with throughout the league.
Phillips helped turn J.J Watt into the mega star he is today through the different techniques he implemented in those seasons. His defense was a big reason why Houston was able to go to the postseason for the first time in franchise history with him there.
This is a great hire for the Broncos as their defense had been lacking last season as the year went on. By the tie the playoff game against the Colts arrived, they were not playing their best football and had many flaws they they could not hide and cover up for.Andrew Luck and company promptly exposed those weaknesses as they lit up that Denver defense on their way to victory.
Phillips will install a 3-4 scheme that will really let players be able to move around and make plays from all different angles. This especially true for the defensive ends for the Broncos you will be in position to be real aggressive and have a clear path to the quarterback and rack up the sacks and just the overall pressure on the opposing quarterback.
It is still unknown how many free agents on the defensive side of the ball their will be returning but Phillips has a good base of talent to work with and mold into a real tough and productive unit that can give almost any opponent troubles and fits.
This will not be an overnight transformation for Philips and this defensive unit, but given time and game reps, they will be able to round into form and be a catalyst for another big Broncos season.
