Marshawn Lynch 140-yards and two touchdowns against Saints to advance to NFC Championship.. Photo credit NFL |
In a rainy and windy Seattle, the New Orleans Saints couldn't capitalize on their defenses effort, forcing Seattle to punt 6 times, and holding them to a total of 277 yards, but the Seahawks once again proved why they have the leagues best defense, dominating the Saints offense in every aspect.
Unlike the Saints, Seattle's defense did capitalize on an early Mark Ingram fumble, that was the momentum shifter, with Marshawn Lynch scoring on a 15 yard carry, he would also run for a 31 yard touchdown later in the fourth quarter. Lynch would go on to finish with a 140 yards on 28 carries and two touchdowns, but they needed that from him, especially with the Saints holding Russell Wilson to only 103 yards passing 0 touchdowns and 16 yards rushing on 3 carries.
With the Seahawks leading 23-8 with 2:40 left in the fourth quarter, Drew Brees started to work his magic, and drove 80 yards and finished with a 9 yard pass to Marques Colston for the touchdown with 26 seconds remaining to make it 23-15. With only one option left, they had to go for the onside kick, the Saints were 2/2 this season on onside kicks, and giving Shane Graham a chance to redeem himself after 0/2 on field goals during the game, New Orleans would go onto recover it after Golden Tate couldn't hold on to it, giving the Saints life again.
With 26 seconds left, Brees hit Jimmy Graham which was his first reception of the game for an 8 yard gain, after a spike to stop the clock, Brees found Colston near the sidelines, who then proceeded to throw it to Darren Sproles but it was ruled an illegal forward pass for obvious reason, which resulted in a penalty and a 10 second wear off of the game clock, sealing the victory for the Seahawks and punching a ticket to the NFC Championship Game. They play the winner of the San Francisco 49ers versus the Carolina Panthers game on Sunday.
