Defensive Pro-Bowlers Dwight Freeney and Charles Woodson released

Now that the dust has settled on NFL coaching changes, GMs have now turned their focus on salary cap decisions.

The Green Bay Packers have decided after 14 seasons to release 1998 defensive rookie of the year and 2009 NFL defensive player of the year Charles Woodson.

Woodson is the only player to ever have six straight seasons with a pick six, 2006-11. He has recently had to battle injuries and even moved to safety from his longtime position of cornerback. Sources close to Woodson have stated that he wants to play for another contender to win another Super Bowl to add to his one Super Bowl with the Packers and College Football National Championship with Michigan, winning the Heisman the same year.

This was pure cap related move. The Packers have to lock-up other younger defensive players like BJ Raji and Clay Matthews. Woodson was due $9 million in 2013, but would have counted $10 million towards the salary cap.

"I was very surprised...", stated Dwight Freeny in a text message to ESPN's Ed Werder. "It would have been nice to retire a Colt...My plan is to hit the free-agent market and see who has interest."

The Colts have decided not to re-sign Freeney, the franchise sack leader, 107.5. He has been with the Colts since 2002 and honestly the only player most NFL fans can name on the defensive roster over the last 10 years.
