Cowboys Mini-Bye Triage: Lamb's Quad Is Just a Bruise, Guyton's X-Rays Negative as Jerry Eyes Another Defensive Trade
Cowboys Nation, the morning-after news out of The Star was better than the game. Now the question is what Jerry does with the next month.
Brian Schottenheimer met with reporters Friday, and the injury news from Thursday's 24-16 loss to Tampa Bay came back mostly clean, per NBC Sports' ProFootballTalk. CeeDee Lamb, who was in and out of the game on the final drive, has a bruised quadriceps. Left tackle Tyler Guyton's back X-rays were negative after he sat out the last offensive series, with Broderick Jones filling in. Joey Porter Jr., who arrived at AT&T Stadium sick and was made inactive, is feeling better. The one real concern is safety Alijah Clark, who has a hamstring issue and is day-to-day. That matters because P.J. Locke and Jalen Thompson are already on injured reserve.
The calendar helps. Dallas doesn't play again until Oct. 18 at Green Bay, so the Thursday game buys three extra days of rest. Schottenheimer plans to use them to look at everything. "I'll spend countless hours trying to figure it out and getting a chance to step back, look at these five games, and see what we need to improve," he said, per CBS Sports, which reported the review could include changes to his staff. CBS also notes it was his 12th loss in his first 22 games since replacing Mike McCarthy.
Jerry Jones didn't hide how he felt. "Extraordinarily, extraordinarily disappointed," he said, per CBS. "They basically were very physical. I thought both their fronts, was really surprised at how well they ran the ball, how they ran it between the tackles." Tampa Bay ran for 241 yards. Dallas ran just 13 times on 55 offensive plays.
Then there's the trade talk. On Saturday, The Athletic's Jonathan Jones reported that, according to one of his sources, the Cowboys are "going to turn over every stone in an attempt to get this thing fixed," per SI's Cowboys site. Jones added that Dallas is "running out of tradable resources," but that won't stop Jerry from making a move before the Nov. 10 deadline if he feels it's necessary. SI's Mike Moraitis thinks edge rusher is the top need. Dallas has 76 pressures in five games but only five sacks, and half of those came from edge rushers. That's a finishing problem, and top edge rushers rarely hit the trade market.
Track every move on the Dallas Cowboys page. Radio question: would one more trade fix this defense, or is the problem bigger than personnel?
