MAVERICKS ADD THREE TO TRAINING CAMP ROSTER
DALLAS — The Dallas Mavericks announced today they have signed free agents Josh Akognon, Tu Holloway and DJ Mbenga to complete their training camp roster. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Akognon (5-11, 185) is a Petaluma, Calif., native who started his collegiate career at Washington StateUniversity before transferring to California State University, Fullerton. As a junior, he led the Titans to a Big West regular season title, Big West Tournament Championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance for the first time in 30 years. As a senior, Akognon was named Big West Conference Player of the Year after averaging 23.9 points per game.
Holloway (6-0, 190) played collegiately at Xavier University and went undrafted in the 2012 NBA Draft. In his four years as a Musketeer, he played in 134 games and held career averages of 13.7 points, 4.1 assists and 1.2 steals per contest. As a junior, Holloway was Atlantic 10 Player of the Year and earned Third Team All-America honors from the Associated Press while averaging 19.7 points and 5.4 assists a game.
Mbenga (7-0, 240) is native of Congo who was originally signed by Dallas as a rookie free agent on July 14, 2004 after playing with the Mavericks summer league squad. In his first stint with Dallas he saw action in 79 games averaging 1.3 points and 0.9 rebounds. Mbenga was waived by Dallas on Oct. 30, 2007. Since his time inDallas, Mbenga has played for Golden State, L.A. Lakers and New Orleans. He holds career averages of 1.8 points and 1.5 rebounds in 234 games (4 starts).

Notre Dame to move the ACC from Big East; $5 Million Penalty is Cheap
Notre Dame has decided that it will now play all sports excluding football in the ACC, not the Big East. The Big East is requiring the Fightin' Irish to pay a $5 million dollar penalty, when both Syracuse and Pittsburgh payed $7.5 million dollars after a negotiating to join the ACC also. They will start in June of 2013.The football program will remain an independent. The school tried to align the football program with the Big 10 back in 1999, but the alumni base would not have it. Besides, why turn down a lucrative deal with NBC?

CHRISTY BELLA JOINER JOINS AUTHOR STEVE NAGY TO RAISE CANCER AWARENESS!!!...AN INSPIRATIONAL STORY!
By far, this is one of the most important and most fulfilling stories that I’ll ever write. It even takes precedent over writing about my beloved Dallas Cowboys. Coincidently the special lady that I’m writing about IS a huge Cowboys fan. However for this time at least, the main focus won’t be about Super Bowl Rings. Our focus today is about a deadly disease, cancer, and the lady who is helping to prevent it. May I introduce model, actress and spokeswomen, Christy Bella Joiner.
“She is one of the best people with a caring, down-to-earth and humble personality.” I can certainly attest to that, especially after Christy e-mailed to me some heart-warming experiences about her life. As per Christy, it was Larry David who helped her to get involved in SU2C (Stand Up 2 Cancer). From there she started to research more and more, leading to the formation of her own team. She calls it, “Team Christy Bella”. From there Christy decided to join the “Make a Wish” foundation. This organization grants wishes to children with life-threatening diseases. She recalled one special child to me during our conversation.
This particular child requested an Autographed Modeling Picture of Christy. What stood out to her was the fact that she was the number one choice above all else. Christy stated to me, “If I had one wish and was fighting cancer as a CHILD, I would wish for something really cool like “Tinkerbell” or a DISNEY character..Why me??? What if he was not happy!” Christy told me of a solution that she came up with.
To ensure the lads jubilation, Christy sent her entire portfolio, with the exception of any sexy pics. (LOL) of course! This was despite the tremendous cost to her. What she sent included advertisements, magazines and fashion shoots. About a month later Christy received a call from the child and his mother. They were ECSTATIC with joy and appreciation! However Christy felt more like SHE should be the one to be thanking them. The gifts were sent prior to his operation, as both the mother and child touched Christy’s heart and soul. They still keep in touch as the child continues to recover. No doubt that Christy’s inspiration will help tremendously!
“Make a Wish Foundation has become a passion of mine just as my (Christy) endless fight against cancer. Charity work means the world to me, Stephen.” Today the “Entourage” star maintains a private life, since the loss of her “hero” to prostate cancer. Christy’s “hero” is her father. She has turned down offers to be in television and movies, stating that her main passions are to make a difference in the world and music, music?? Oh yeah, Christy is an accomplished Classical Pianist too. One of her most impressive credentials was being able to play Beethoven on the piano at the young age of five. She briefly stopped playing after her father’s passing, but since her birthday, she recently starting playing again. Now she’s playing Chopin, as no doubt her father is “orchestrating” from heaven!
In closing, Christy wrote to me, “I’m Honored to be a part of this!” So am I “Bella”, so am I!

Desoto Eagles Head Coach Claude Mathis sits down with RFSN
We caught up with Coach Mathis of the Desoto Eagles after their impressive win over Arlington Martin 34-17. He talked bout the new district, upcoming game against Jenks, and the focus going into this season.
Interview: Rodney Fisher and Coach Claude Mathis, Desoto High School
Rodney Fisher: Alright coach, good to see you again of course. Get ready for the good season. Let me
ask you first of all about the new district. Umm…A little bit different than what you guys had last
season. Now you got a lot of city rivalries, player rivalries, and it’s a really big team, Cedar Hill, South
Grand Prairie, Mansfield, Timberview. You think this new district really helps you guys out as far as
keeping it high ranking and playing more competitive teams?
Coach Claude Mathis: Well I think it helps us financially first of all…
Rodney Fisher: Okay, yeah
Coach Claude Mathis: So, we ain’t gotta travel to East Texas so much, and try to help…uhh…the district
out with the budget. But, oh I think it’s good for the community because you get the rivalries back going
and everything. And then you have a bunch of kids that know each other so it makes it fun on their end
right there, but it makes it a little bit harder for us because now I think we’re in the hardest district in
the state right now from some people are saying. So… It’s definitely got our…Our district’s definitely
gotten a lot more interesting this year.
Rodney Fisher: Have you found that the players are feeding into it a lot more? Practice a lot more?
I know you’re a focused guy as it is… whether you see the kids getting more excited now they’re
playing these guys that they know.
Coach Claude Mathis: I think they are. I think they are. We haven’t really put much emphasis on it right
now. We usually take one game at a time, and…umm…so far we’re doing that. But I guarantee you when
it hits district and we start off with Cedar Hill, I think that’s when it’ll set in with our kids. I think they’ll
really start having little more fun.
Rodney Fisher: Now in the one you had on Friday against, Arillington Martin, you won 34-17, and in
that game, Des White, I think he threw for 158…or 188 in rushing yards for 175 or around that area.
Is that kind of the balance you want him to have or would you like to see him do more of one or the
other?
Coach Claude Mathis: We could of did a lot more. Uh…I think Des is going to have a great balance
to share just ‘cus Coach Peterman does a great job with the offensive staff and making sure to put
our kids in a great situation to be successful. But we want to be balanced. We want to be like fifty-
fifty on offense when it comes to passing and our running game. But Des definitely had a fantastic
game…Umm…We should have…We should have completed more passes than we did last week. I’m little
disappointed in that area right there, but I’d rather have over 200 yards passing than him over 100 yards
rushing if that’s possible. So that’s kind of the goals that we’re looking for.
Rodney Fisher: Yea, I think he was 10 for 21, 2 INT’s last…so… Is that something you guys are going to
be working on as far as getting him more proficient as a passer?
Coach Claude Mathis: Yes…Yes…We are…I mean, like I said before, he was just off. He was just off the
other night. He under threw some guys. At the same time, everybody said he had a great game, which
he did, but just imagine if he would’ve been on.
Rodney Fisher: Right
Coach Claude Mathis: If he would’ve been on, that’s a dangerous kid to be playing against right there.
But I feel honestly, I’ll say it over, too. I feel that we can pass with 300 yards a game with this young
man right here because he has the arm and knows the game. You understand, a lot of people don’t
understand he shared time last year, but now he’s getting more into reading defenses now like Polite
had to do and our last quarterback had to do. But…uh…Raheem…So right now, once he gets to reading
the defenses, he’ll become a lot better, faster, efficient quarterback.
Rodney Fisher: And your defense…you guys held ‘em to no points in the second half last week. Talk a
little about the defense this year in comparison to last year.
Coach Claude Mathis: Well, this year our defense is young. I mean we only have two starters coming
back. We have…um…Teddy Young, which is the anchor, along with Nick Orr, the secondary. So those
two guys right there the only returning starters. Everybody else is just new this year. So…I think Coach
Miller’s made a big difference with our D-line, a young D-line. Umm…which I didn’t think was going
to be great. I didn’t. I was really hard on those guys this spring and this summer, and Coach Miller has
prove me wrong from game one.
Rodney Fisher: Yea
Coach Claude Mathis: So…He’s got a good team to make that happen right there, but I think Coach
Brown…um…he knows the sense of urgency right now with our defense. He know they’re young. He’s
put ‘em in situations along with our defensive staff to be successful this year…Changed some things up
now and it’s working for us especially for the first ballgame at least.
Rodney Fisher: Good. Well you guys had your first one of course, and this week you’re playing Jenks,
Oklahoma, the Trojans up in Jenks, and they’re number four in the state of Oklahoma. Have you
scouted this team? Do you know what to expect from them? I know they lost last week, so they’ll be
looking for a win.
Coach Claude Mathis: I don’t see how they’re number four. I guess that that loss to Union must of
dropped to number four ‘cus they are definitely a top two team in that state right there from what I’m
hearin’ and from what I’ve seen on film. They can play. Uh…very good ball club…Coached very well… lot
of tradition…bunch of state championships…so…uh…when they come down here it’s gonna be a little bit
different for them. I say that just because they’re back in the state of Texas and they’re [No idea what
was said] our Texas rules when it come to playing. But, uh, they’re gonna adjust very well…coached very
well…It’s gonna be a great game.
Rodney Fisher: Yea, and you guys Euless Trinity after that. Then you start district play. How do
you…How do you get these…these schedules. Where do the schedules come from?
Coach Claude Mathis: They kind of…They kind of come from when you…when you…when you have a lot
of success that sometimes it’s hard to schedule games. It’s hard to get people to play you, and Trinity
is one of those teams that has a hard time finding…umm…we’re one of the teams, too…as well…that’s
finding people…There’s a bunch more in the state of Texas. That’s just the way it is. I mean we can’t
do anything about that. So sometimes the powerhouses are going to have to play each other now just
because we’re having trouble finding games. Would we like to do that all the time? Heck no.
Rodney Fisher: Yea
Coach Claude Mathis: ‘cus we try to stay healthy just like everybody else is doing in district.
Rodney Fisher: Right
Coach Claude Mathis: But sometimes I think it’s good for the…for the community, for the game of
football, for our players and everything. Um…no trust me…if I could dodge Trinity, I would. I wouldn’t be
playing them right now, but we don’t have a choice.
Rodney Fisher: Right. Well I want to thank you again for allowing us to broadcast this time. It’s been

you…How do you get these…these schedules. Where do the schedules come from?
Coach Claude Mathis: They kind of…They kind of come from when you…when you…when you have a lot
of success that sometimes it’s hard to schedule games. It’s hard to get people to play you, and Trinity
is one of those teams that has a hard time finding…umm…we’re one of the teams, too…as well…that’s
finding people…There’s a bunch more in the state of Texas. That’s just the way it is. I mean we can’t
do anything about that. So sometimes the powerhouses are going to have to play each other now just
because we’re having trouble finding games. Would we like to do that all the time? Heck no.
Rodney Fisher: Yea
Coach Claude Mathis: ‘cus we try to stay healthy just like everybody else is doing in district.
Rodney Fisher: Right
Coach Claude Mathis: But sometimes I think it’s good for the…for the community, for the game of
football, for our players and everything. Um…no trust me…if I could dodge Trinity, I would. I wouldn’t be
playing them right now, but we don’t have a choice.

Everybody Lies - The NFL Referee Holdout

A well-renown, pill-popping, New Jersey-based, television
doctor had a saying: “Everyone lies.” While this may not be perfectly true, it
certainly holds whenever people are talking about labor disputes or contract
holdouts. It is the reason why when Maurice Jones-Drew said that his contract
holdout wasn’t entirely about the money, nobody believed him. It is also why
when the NFL and their referees say that it is only about the money we should
be skeptical.

Right now, referees get paid about $3000 per game with the
some of the referees making up to $140,000 per year. The NFL wants to increase
the number of available NFL-approved referees and replace the pension that was
part of the CBA the negotiated back in 2006 and put in place a defined
contribution 401(k) valued somewhere between $16,000 and $22,000, according to
ESPN.com. The league is citing a downturning “economic environment,” which is
the same argument they used against the players.
These numbers should seem low. In 2011, the NFL grossed $9
billion in revenue. That’s billion…with
a “b.” Why then are they arguing about what would amount to less than 1% of
their revenue? Because it isn’t about the money.
Instead, what this holdout is really about is the NFL
telling the referees that they are a dime a dozen, and if they don’t want to
work, then they will find someone who will. The NFL wants their referees to
feel replaceable. They want them to know their place.
The referees on the other hand want to show the NFL that without
their expertise, the quality of the product that the NFL produces will decline.
And it will. If you watched a preseason game, then you got to see some of this
in action. There were questionable calls (more so than in a normal NFL game);
there were more challenges; and the pace of the game felt a lot slower. In week
one of the preseason in the game between Green Bay and San Diego, there was an unsportsmanlike
penalty called for after a rookie scored his first NFL sack and flexed. The ref
said that that constituted unnecessary celebration. Granted, that was the first
week of the preseason and many refs weren’t used to the NFL rules, but the
preseason represents a much slower game. Players simply don’t care that much
about the preseason.

When the regular season comes around (Wednesday September 5,
2012, Dallas at New York Giants), calls will be missed. The NFL is hoping that
these calls aren’t too egregious. The referees currently embroiled in a holdout
hope they are.
Best case scenario? We have replacement referees on Wednesday,
but they reach a deal and are able to work on Sunday. However, this remains
unlikely. Once a deal is met, each NFL referee must undergo a fitness test and
a recertification. Basically, the referee equivalent of a checkup. It is far
more likely that the NFL will wait until after the Monday night game to
determine what kind of leverage it has. If the replacement refs do well, then
you can be sure the NFL will force the Union to agree to its terms. If they do
poorly, then it becomes a much more interesting story. It boils down to how
much the NFL wants to taint its product with poor officiating.
This is especially excruciating for the coaches and players.
After all, at the end of the day they are the ones that have to play under
these circumstances. With poor officiating, players are able to get away with
more, which in turn leads to more injuries. Coaches on the “hot seat” could
also lose their jobs. The NFL is a league of inches, and poor officiating can
be the difference in a potential playoff appearance or being on the outside
looking in.
No matter what happens with the end of this holdout,
remember this. Everybody lies, and when they say it is about the money…then it
definitely isn’t.
