Training Camp Report: Cowboys Considering Manziel for Backup?

At the end of the first week of Dallas Cowboys training camp, things seem to have started where they left off at the quarterback position. Tony Romo is not on the field. The projected backup quarterback, Kellen Moore, is out for most of the season. And an untested rookie QB, Dak Prescott, is taking reps with the first team. The uncertainty under center remains a constant.

Plan A was to acquire Nick Foles, but he shunned "offensive guru" Jason Garrett to play under the coach that drafted him, Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs. For a player that forced his way out of the LA Rams because he wants to be a long-term starter, backing up the injury prone Romo would seem to be the better option. But playing in cold KC behind a younger Alex Smith appeared better.

Plan B? Sources within the organization have told us that they are "considering many options." When asked directly if those options including a Dallas resident, former Heisman winner quarterback with a fondness for the dramatic named Johnny Manziel, the reply was "we are considering it."

Truth be told, the Cowboys will need to wait until the NFL finally deals out the expected suspension to Manziel for his off the field criminal behavior. Once that is handed down, do not be surprised to see Johnny Football throwing the ball with the second team.

New Updates:

Stephen Jones has denied that Johnny Manziel will be an option for the Cowboys.

Manziel has been spotting in Los Angeles this week. A few miles south of training camp in Oxnard, California.

We are also being told that the $2 million fine from the NFL for the Cowboys having three current players suspended may deter them from pursuing Manziel.

Jerry Jones Ready To Embrace Life After Romo

Jason Garrett, Charlotte Jones, Jerry Jones, and Stephen Jones discuss the 2016 NFL Draft picks.

Jerry Jones has always stated that Tony Romo will be his quarterback for the next few years, but the recent draft shows his acceptance to prepare to move on.

by Rodney Fisher

The Dallas Cowboys started the draft with two main goals:

  1. Take Ezekiel Elliott with the 4th pick.
  2. Trade back into the first round and take quarterback Paxton Lynch.
After a proposed trade with the Seattle Seahawks was trumped by the Denver Broncos to draft Lynch with the 26th overall pick, the Cowboys set their sites on Michigan State QB Connor Cook or Mississippi State QB Dak Prescott. The selected Prescott in the fourth round.

When contemplating how to select the potential Romo-replacement, they sought the advice of legend Roger Staubach. His advice was to focus on the intangibles like leadership and self-confidence. Prescott was a team captain for the Bulldogs since he showed up on campus.

Jerry, the ultimate oil wildcatter, has made his bet. Even if Prescott turns out not to be the heir apparent, Jones has committed to begin the search. Romo's multiple injuries took their toll on the entire fan base last year, including the Jones family. The countless camera shots of a depressed luxury box started the process to think about the future.

The belief that Romo will return to action 100% should be taken with a grain of salt. Jones draft choice of Elliott with the 4th pick over Florida State safety Jalen Ramsay signifies that Romo needs help in the backfield. With DeMarco Murray leading the NFL rushing, Romo was able to audible out of the blitz more to protect his fragile frame. The hodge-podge mixture of running backs last year let him over exposed and his injury was inevitable.

Jones openness about pushing hard to get Paxton Lynch and drafting Prescott is the fresh thinking that fans have been craving. The Romo era is almost over.

The Truth About Tony Romo

The future of the quarterback position in Dallas is a big concern.

What`s next for Tony Romo after surgery?

by Da`Vince “Dino” Wright

Let`s face it. The surgery that Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is a difficult one. So many quarterbacks has been through what he`s going through right now. Repairing a broken clavicle in the right hands is easy. You have thousands of doctors and specialists performing this type of surgery everyday of the week. But in this case, Tony Romo is not the ordinary patient laying on the table. In the minds of Cowboy faithful he is the catalyst of the team and we need him healthy to win a Super Bowl. Let`s take a look at what happened to where we as Cowboy fans go from here.

The Injury

He broke his clavicle three different times in 5 years. This is a problem, we need him under center to win games. Every time he takes a sack or gets hit the fans, front office and players begin to sweat. This surgery hes having is to get the bone plated for protection. Plating the bone is basically hinging it to keep it from cracking or popping out of place.

Next Move for the Cowboys

Dallas has to draft a quarterback or sign another starter caliber quarterback over the off season. The Cowboys have a few veterans to chose from in the upcoming months. Fans would love to see RG3, Chase Daniels, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Matt Moore or Tarvaris Jackson as a back up. You look at that list of names and say, “What is he thinking?” The key to the offense success over the past 3 years is the line. Look at what happened when DeMarco Murray ran behind it. Darren McFadden got a 1,000 yards behind them this past year. Romo is the leader but the line is the key.

Tony Romo`s Contract

Let`s face it Tony Romo will retire a Cowboy. On March 4, 2014 he converted $12.5 million of his base salary into a signing bonus. The move created $12.8 million in cap space. So the money is there to sign or draft a back up. But getting someone isn`t the proble. Signing someone that`s ready to step in is key!

NFL Training Camp: Dallas Cowboys Offensive Preview

by Chad Jones
Dallas Cowboys Dez Bryant and Tony Romo
A year from today, Gavin Escobar will be appearing on national television shows to preview Cowboys Camp, and will be considered a matchup nightmare across the NFL. His value won't be exclusively in production, but in his ability to transform the Cowboys offense into a dynamic attack. Jason Garrett is an adept schemer that has learned from some of the brightest minds in football. While he won't be responsible for play calling, he will be integral to preparing the offense for each opponent.

Entering the offseason $ 25 Million over the salary cap, contract restructuring was critical. Transitioning to a 4-3 Under Defense, comprehensively addressing the cap dilemma was the preeminent concern.

Taking a broad overview, the major cap figures consisted of predominantly guaranteed money. Cuts wouldn't open cap room, but rather would result in predominantly Dead Money.

The Day I Stopped Being a Cowboy Fan

Let me be honest. I will more than likely be back on the Cowboys bandwagon by the time the season starts, but today the Romo extension has me disgusted.

Tony Romo not happy with Jason Garrett's playcalling after Atlanta loss

Dallas - The Cowboys lost to the Atlanta Falcons last night 19-13. Dallas started the game with two great drives on offense that only netted 6 points. This season quarterback Tony Romo has had to call more audibles than any other time in his career. The reason, based on a team insider, is his dislike for some of the plays head coach and offensive coordinator Jason Garrett is calling.

Fantasy Football Picks and Sleepers

by Ryan Henry

Fantasy football season is here. I’m here to give you a leg up on your competition. Last year was the year of the quarterbacks. Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees and Tom Brady all put up insane, record-breaking numbers, and if you were fortunate to have one of these three players on your teams, you probably were competing for a championship. This year is going to be more of the same. For these recommendations, I am assuming standard scoring with 4 points per passing touchdown.

The reason why quarterbacks were so dominant was because of a term called comparative advantage. Essentially, if you were able to draft any one of those three quarterbacks (Rodgers, Brees or Brady) or even to a lesser extent Cam Newton or Matthew Stafford, then you were at least 60 points better than everyone else. This year, if you aren’t able to get one of those 5, then you might as well wait. There is a lot of value later in the draft. If you draft later in the first round, after Rodgers, Brady and Brees are off the board, then wait until some of the middle rounds when you can get Eli Manning (ADP 49.7 in Yahoo! Leagues) or Tony Romo (ADP 60).

Arian Foster is the clear number one pick. While he does have some injury concerns, he is the focal point of an extraordinary offense, and has shown that he known how to tear apart defenses. He deserves a tier of his own. Running back is another position where you can get good value a little later, but be careful about waiting too long. After Darren McFadden (ADP 16.2), Jamaal Charles (ADP 31.7) and DeMarco Murray (ADP 27.1) go off the board, the remaining backs have some huge question marks surrounding them. Can Adrian Peterson (17.8) come back from an ACL tear? How many games will Ryan Matthews (ADP 6.8, but this number is artificially low because a lot of drafts took place before he broke his shoulder) play this season? Can Marshawn Lynch (ADP 23.9) avoid drinking and driving? Questions like these plague the running backs that have been going in the middle of the draft.

Can McFadden stay healthy? Courtesy nfl.com
Trent Richardson (ADP 14.7) is the big question mark at running back. He has a lot of potential. He was a beast at Alabama, and will be the featured back in the burgeoning Cleveland offense. However, he has already had two knee surgeries and he hasn’t played a single down.  If he slips into the third round or late into the second, then grab him; otherwise, I prefer a little less risk than that with my first round draft pick.

If you want good value, especially if you are in a PPR league, then look no further than Darren Sproles (ADP 53.5). He is benefits the most from switching to this scoring method. ESPN has him as the 21st best player in PPR formats, while 42nd in standard scoring.

The real position to watch, though, is tight end. Contrary to every other year, if you have a later pick in the first round, then you should take a good long look at Rob Gronkowski (ADP 16.7) or Jimmy Graham (ADP 16.2). These two tight ends put up wide receiver-esque numbers and can put you 5-10 points ahead of your opponent every week. However, waiting can also give you some good returns. Jared Cook (ADP 132), Coby Fleemer (ADP 130.8) and Jacob Tamme (ADP 110.6) are all players that should be available later that could have breakout seasons. Cook has great hands and in the preseason has looked impressive. Fleemer is reunited with his quarterback from college, Andrew Luck (ADP 117.6), and hopes to continue to keep the mojo going where they were one of the most prolific duo in college football. Tamme benefits from having Peyton Manning (ADP 51) at the helm, who favored his tight end in Indianapolis, Dallas Clark (ADP 133.6).

Gronkowski is a touchdown machine. Courtesy nfl.com
Titus Young (ADP 120.7), Antonio Brown (ADP 62.2), Cedric Benson (ADP 116) and Kevin Smith (ADP 117.7) are my sleepers for this season.  Young will benefit from Matthew Stafford (ADP 17.4) having completed an entire season last year and Calvin Johnson (ADP 5.8) needs to be double teamed every time he is on the field. Young showed growth last year, and I expect him to have a breakout season. Benson is the number one running back in the number one offense. That fact alone should be enough of a reason to give him a long look. The only problem is that we don’t know how many touches he will get. Brown had a good end of season last and was a monster in PPR leagues. Much like Young, Brown should build upon last season. Mike Wallace (ADP 32) was embroiled in a contract holdout throughout much of training camp, and Brown looks to benefit the most from that.

Brown looks to have another successful season. Courtesy nfl.com
While Demaryius Thomas (ADP 41) is the official number one wide receiver in Denver, Eric Decker (ADP 70.2) looks like he has the better rapport with Peyton Manning coming out of training camp. Manning liked to spread the ball around in Indianapolis, and you can expect he will do the same in Denver.

Dear Jerry Jones, Blow it up!

Last night was the last time this Cowboy fan gets kicked in the family jewels. Sure we could look at the numbers and know what happened in the game, but we need to focus on what we see with our own eyes. You can't find one team in the world that has enough luck to lose a game the same way as many times as the 2011-2012 Cowboys. Jerry, you have put your team in the hands of the best offensive and defensive coordinators at the available time for what? Can you honestly say you have confidence in Jason Garrett, the Princeton offensive guru, and Rob Ryan, the next NFL head coach? Can you have confidence in a QB that throws 4 TDs, but can't hit a wide open Miles Austin to win the game? What about a defense that can't line up before the opposing offense snaps the ball?

There is but one solution Mr. Jones, Blow it up! New personnel, new coaches, and a new GM. That's right Jerry...You're Fired! Stick to what you do best and market Americas team. Leave the football to football people like Jimmy and Parcells. You want to WIN don't you! Division opponents, like the Giants, have a better record in your stadium that your own team. I'm frustrated, I'm sick, I'm tired, and I'm out on this season....

Sincerely,
Cowboy Fan For Life

We Need Your Opinion for Tonight's Show: Cowboys Collapse

What are your thoughts on the Cowboys losing a 24pt lead?

What about Romo?

What about the coaches?

Let us know, so we can read your comments on the show tonight!

Dear Jerry Jones: Watch Romo

Dear Jerry,
I know it has been a while since we have talked, but I think this season will be different. We need to talk. Like you, I'm a huge Cowboys fan. Like you, I've been with this team from 1-15 to 3 Super Bowl Rings. I was even on board with you when you started your QB science project to replace the legendary Troy Aikman. I watched you mine the abyss of veteran NFLers and the vast caverns of undrafted free agents looking for gold. Just like the 21st century 49ers on reality TV still prospecting the hills and mountains of the frontier, you have to watch out for fool's gold. True, you have been able to decipher between the two before with Chad Hutchinson and Quincy Carter, but what about Tony. Your oil background keeps you always looking at a barren landscape and say, "Yep, this is the spot". I applaud that in most respects in terms of buying the team, hiring Jimmy, drafting "The Triplets", and building the greatest indoor enclosure in the world. But did you watch last Sunday. How many times do we (me and you) have to watch Tony lose a game on his own. Jerry, I know there is no easy fix. We don't have some hotshot rookie in the wings or a fan favorite backup, but Kitna would not have done that. Kitna won more games than Romo last year...right. I not asking you to demote him, not yet anyway, but watch him this week Jerry. Watch his locker room demeanor. Watch how he prepares for what many fans think to be the biggest game of his roller coaster career. Then watch the game. I know you gotta entertain your West Coast partners in your premium suite, but just watch the 4th quarter. When the game is on the line and we are one play away and you just don't need to turn the ball over and you know....the list goes on. Jerry you are not gun shy bro. You fired Jimmy Johnson after back-to-back Super Bowl wins; you can demote a QB that hasn't won anything but regular season games and 1 playoff win in 6 years. Don't worry, I plan on watching too.

Sincerely,
              RF

Cowboys Suck! Tony Romo is Out! Dez Bryant is going to Hawaii! Oh yeah.....Cowboys Suck!

Ok...Now if you guys have ever heard the show then you know I'm a Cowboy fan! But boy do they suck right now! The 1-5 Boys didn't penalize themselves to a loss this time, the just got whooped. The Giants again seemed to just be more physical then the team that needed the win. The Boys came out blazing with a TD to Witten, but failure to capitalize on another turnover should have warned me then. Miles Austin was missing sure catches, the running backs could not run, and once again our secondary looked like the should be playing Saturday morning at your local field not Monday night. Eli Manning, the only Super Bowl winning QB in the NFC East, looked like his older brother directing the pass protection and calling audibles. Did I mentioned he threw 4 TDs! Bradie James and Keith Brooking were getting pancaked by the Giants offensive line all game.

To add insult to injury, Tony Romo breaks a collarbone in the second quarter and gives the offense to 14 year veteran John Kitna. Did I mention that he went 3 and out 14 straight times! He is done!

Dez Bryant was the only player on the team that seemed to play with heart. He scored 3 TDs, 2 receiving and 1 on a punt return. Maybe the players need to follow a ROOKIE as a leader. He seems to be the only player trying to win after Romo went down.

Dez...buddy pack your bags for Hawaii. Wade...pack your bags too!!!!
