MLB: Chicago White Sox Fire Sale

by Chad Jones
Kenny Williams of the Chicago White Sox.

Rick Hahn & Kenny Williams were extended this offseason, inheriting a roster with overpaid Free Agents, virtually no farm system & failed draft selections. The White Sox are one of the loan Front Offices that continues to besmirch advanced statistics. Basically, Money Ball represented a new way of thinking, an analytic process that has further evolved, and engulfed 28 other Front Offices. Building an MLB Roster now requires statistical reverence, albeit it's applied to varying degrees across baseball. But not for the Chicago White Sox, who are traditionalists in the truest sense.

Matt Ryan, franchise tag?
by Chad Jones

With the drama of Franchise Tags nearing the July 15th Deadline, we take a look ahead to next offseasons potential Franchise Tagged Players.

NFL Agents loathe the Franchise Tag, a Tender teams reserve the right to utilize on their own Free Agents. The tender can be applied 2 times on one player, and has been utilized in consecutive years recently (Redskins Fred Davis & Cowboys Anthony Spencer). While it pays among the upper echelon at their position, it makes garnering a longterm commitment outside the realm of possibility with another club. It creates drama, as the two sides must broker an extension prior to a set July 15th Deadline. Holdouts have occurred, because the NFL is a Business. It hurts the longterm finances of players & is thus vehemently detested. Let's take a look at 2014 Franchise Tag Possibilities.

by Chad Jones

Agents, Executives & Veterans are quietly discussing the shrinking middle class in the NFL. Elite players still land lucrative deals, but $ 3-4 million per year players are endangered species.

Accumulating Talent comes from two markets- The Draft (Wholesale) & Free Agency (Retail).

General Managers have stopped looking at what position money is spent, focusing on accumulating elite players. The draft is used to supplement, where under the rookie wage scale, talent is landed on 4 year affordable contracts. At the drafts conclusion, GMs assert each selection was the highest ranked player on their board. In reality, managing a salary cap requires a deviation from this approach, albeit marginally.
