Texas Rangers Spring Training Report

Texas Rangers Spring Training Report

Sunrise, Arizona - Adding key players is the key for the Rangers this year, but having guys to play multiple position that will help the team.

“It`s good a way to make the team, and, for some, it may be the only way in an organization that places a high value on versatility”, Ranger scout said. “It`s very valuable to have a guy with versatility.”

General Manager Jon Daniels said. “It gives the manager a lot of different options and allows you not to make a roster move if a starter has to miss a day or two. It gives you a ton of roster flexibility.”

When you talk about flexibility your speaking over Ben Zobrist, Hanser Alberto and Drew Robinson. Zobrist Hanser is a two time All-Star that has 10 years in the majors playing all four infield and 3 outfield positions. It`s amazing to have a player that can start anywhere on the diamond. He`s made the All-Star game at 2 different positions and can bat on either side of the dish. He`s also added bulk over the years and we all know when players bulk up, the lose some athletic ability but no him. He keeps getting better wherever you place him. He`s a managers dream.

Hanser Alberto showed his versatility when Adrian Beltre went down in the ALDS with a strained lower back. Alberto is an infielder that covered 3rd base while Beltre was out. He had 0 errors and cut off key runs that kept the Rangers in the series. He even had the game winning hit in the 14th inning to win game 2 for the team. Drew Robinson is a fourth round pick in 2010 from Silverado High School in Las Vegas. He has started all 4 positions in his 458 games played in the minors for the Rangers. He`s a lefty that has great ball placement. He will be the darling for the Rangers this year. These guys will be the turning point from the team last year to this year.

Texas Rangers Biggest Needs For Spring Training

Texas Rangers start spring training with a few needs.

The Rangers Needs Before Spring Training

by Da`Vince “Dino” Wright

The Texas Rangers won their division last year and didn`t get deep into the playoffs. Why? The depth at key positions cost the team dreams of reaching the World Series. Pitching is the first thing that comes to mind and it`s the most important piece to winning. The Rangers has the best farm teams in the MLB. They need to bring up fresh talent to keep the team afloat during dry spells that plague th team.

“The Texas Rangers has a core of young pitchers being developed in the minor league. Why don`t they just bring them up,” said Ryan Gosslet of Dallas Morning News.

“Those young guys are hungry and landing a top 2 tier pitcher will cost them dearly”.

Let` take a look at the needs of the Rangers and the players that would possibly land here.

Pitchers

David Price - He went 18-5 last year with an ERA of 2.45 and 225 strike outs. He made 7.2M.
Will the Rangers make a play for him? They should.
Yovani Gallardo - He was 13-11 with an ERA 3.42 and struck out 121. He was a ranger last year... Pay him! He`s seeking a long term deal and is worth every dime.

Relief Pitchers

Tyler Clippard - NY Mets  He had 19 saves and 2.92 ERA with a 5-4 record
Joskim Soria - Pittsburgh  He had 24 saves and a ERA of 2.53 with a 3-1 record
Shawn Kelley - San Diego He finished with 2-2 and 2.45 ERA and 63 strikeouts

These players can impact the Rangers pitching staff tremendously. The team is solid across the board, but every year pitching cost them. Landing a quality pitcher will be key to building the franchise from mediocre to one of the MLB`s best.

Can Rangers Make The Playoffs

Adrian Beltre and the Texas Rangers will try to bounce back from a 6-5 loss
to the Toronto Blue Jays to continue their playoff push.
The Rangers have wrapped up their series in Detroit against the Tigers. Winning eight of their last ten games, the Rangers are now 64-59, and just 3.5 games behind the Houston Astros for first place in the A.L. West standings. After winning three games of four against the Tigers, the Rangers have increased their chance of not only earning a Wild Card playoff spot, but they’ve increased their chance on winning the division.
Martin Perez took the mound for the Rangers in Game 1. Pitching only five innings, Perez allowed six hits, surrendered three runs and struck out four batters. The Rangers offense was completely shut down and they were able to only get one hit. The Rangers ended up getting blanked 4-0 by the Tigers.
Colby Lewis was on the mound for Game 2. In seven innings, Lewis allowed six hits, surrendered no runs, and struck out two batters, and earned his 14th win of the season. The Rangers offense again struggled, but managed five hits, and the Rangers ended up blanking the Tigers 2-0.
Yovani Gallardo pitched for the Rangers in Game 3 and had a good night. Gallardo pitched six innings, allowing eight hits, surrendering no runs, and striking out four batters. This time, the Rangers offense looked good and recorded ten hits that gave the Rangers the 5-3 win.
Cole Hamels took the mound the final game of the series. Hamels finished his day allowing eight hits, surrendering two runs, and striking out two batters. The Rangers went on to win 4-2, increasing their winning streak to three, and being one step closer to the Wild Card round.
The Rangers will begin a three-game series at home against the Toronto Blue Jays today. The Rangers could reach the first place position if they can sweep Toronto, and if Houston loses their next three games.
