New York broke their three game losing streak. Robertson notched his 27th save in 28 opportunities but nearly blew the win as he surrendered a two run single to Elvis Andrus and loaded up the bases.
Brett Gardner wasted no time getting New York on the board cranking a leadoff home run, his 13th of the season off the top of right field fence.
In the 3rd inning, the Rangers collected 4 hits. Jim Adduci’s two out line drive single up the middle brought Alex Rios across home to tie the game up at 1-1. J.P. Arencibia ripped a two run double past Gardner in left field giving Texas a 3-1 lead. In the 5th inning, Arencibia clubbed an opposite field home run past the outstretched glove of Zoilo Amonte increasing the Rangers lead to 4-1.
The floodgates opened up in the Top of the 6th for the Yankees. Gardner led off with his second double off the game down the right field line. A critical play in the inning as instant replay overturned a call on a ground ball that Derek Jeter beat out at first base as replays showed Arencibia’s foot coming off the bag.
Mark Teixeira walked to load up the bases. Carlos Beltran smashes a single off the glove of Arencibia to bring in Gardner and Jeter cutting Texas’s lead to 4-3.
Brian McCann followed with a sac fly to center field that plated Teixeira tying the game up at 4-4 and knocking starting Rangers pitcher Nick Martinez out of the game. At one point in the game, Martinez had retired 13 out of 14 Yankees hitters he faced.
Almonte’s two out single to right center field off Shawn Tolleson put the Yankees ahead 5-4. Brendan Ryan broke a 0 for 20 slump clubbing a two run double over the head of centerfielder Leonys Martin making the score 7-4. Gardner caught a lucky bounce on a fly ball hit to right field that glanced off the glove of right fielder Alex Rios and bounced off the head of Martin increasing New York’s lead to 8-4.
In the 7th inning, the Yankees added two more runs to extend the lead to 10-4.
However, Texas would not go away quietly as they loaded the bases up in the bottom half of the 7th inning. Dellin Betances replaced an ineffective Adam Warren and served up a grand slam to Arencibia cutting the lead to 10-8.
Teixeira hammered his 18th home run of the season over the left field wall in the 8th inning widening the lead to 12-8.
New York had not scored ten plus runs since April 24th and first time this season they scored seven runs in an inning. The first win for the Yankees since August 21, 2009 when allowing 11 plus runs. Brandon McCarthy earned his third victory going six innings, giving up four runs, scattering nine hits, striking out three on 108 pitches with 71 of them for strikes. Brett Gardner is 7 for 10 in the series with 2 doubles, 3 home runs, 3 RBI’s and 5 runs scored.
