A vicious thunderstorm producing high winds, torrential downpours and vivid lightning prevented the grounds crew from laying the tarp on the infield. This caused the field to become very soggy and dangerous to play on.
In the third inning, Brett Gardner broke the deadlock bashing his 10th home run of the season into the right field seats giving the Yankees a 2-1 lead which would stand up.
David Phelps, who registered his 5th win of the season, worked out a jam in the top of the 5th after yielding a one out triple to Leonys Martin. Phelps got Chris Giminez to pop up behind home plate while striking out Rougned Odor to end the inning.
Francisco Cervelli doubled down the left field line to lead off the 3rd inning. Brendan Ryan moved Cervelli over to 3rd on a ground out to second base. As starting Rangers pitcher Yu Darvish was pitching to Gardner he made a slight hesitation with his body which caused the home plate umpire to signal a balk plating Cervelli to tie the game up at one. Darvish’s record dropped to 9-6 but did strike out five Yankees batters while walking none.
Texas took the lead 1-0 in the top half of the 3rd inning. Martin led off with a single followed by a hit and run base hit through the hole into right field by Giminez. Odor grounded into a double play that brought Martin home for the first run of the game.
This marked the first time since 1978 vs. Orioles the Yankees had won a game of five innings long. On Thursday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. New York and Texas conclude their four  game series.
