Dallas Mavericks: Why You Should Still Love The Mavs

Where is your love for the Dallas Mavericks.
by Rodney Fisher

How long does the feel of victory last? Sunday, June 12, 2011 is cemented in the memory Dallas Mavericks fans as the day it finally happened. After wallowing in NBA obscurity, losing in the playoffs, and even losing in The Finals in 2006, the little Mavs won it all. Add the fact they won by beating LeBron James and the Miami Heat and victory tasted 10-times sweeter.

Thursday night the All-Star reserves were released. Their were some snubs, but that's for another article. Now that the All-Star rosters are set let's see who we will be watching on All Star weekend February 16th.

The Houston Rockets are probably more concerned about losing back-to-back games to the Memphis Grizzlies to end the week than anything else. But during the week, the somewhat quiet Rockets voiced their opinions on other basketball related activities that are not on the court.

How does an NBA team go from ending the season with a 13-game losing streak to a 31-9 record at the midway point of the next season? The Portland Trailblazers with second-year head coach Terry Stotts have figured it out.

Sorry Mavs, I Won't Give Up on You

Before the 2010-2011 NBA season the Dallas Mavericks were expected to be a contender yet again, but not a serious one...yet again.

The Mavs were coming off a very impressive regular season but fell as the number 2 seed in the 2010 Western Conference first round to the rival San Antonio Spurs. It was a madly depressing end for a team that seemed destined to achieve the pinnacle of basketball greatness for the first time in their 30 year existence.

Another slick deal was made this time the Golden State Warriors were the ones being the slickster. They made a deal that strengthened their bench and may help them have a better chance at making a long run in the playoffs this year.

One-on-One With Jamal Crawford of the Los Angeles Clippers

Nothing in life is promised. The same holds true for the NBA. Jamal Crawford was drafted eight overall in 2000 NBA draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers after one year with the University of Michigan. Since then, he has put on seven different uniforms. He, unlike most players drafted that year, has carved a niche for himself in the NBA as a sixth man, even winning Sixth Man of the Year in the 2009-2010 season.

I caught up with Crawford in Dallas as his Los Angeles Clippers team prepared to take on the Dallas Mavericks. Crawford was asked to change his role from sixth man to starter due to injuries to J.J. Redick, even before Chris Paul got hurt later in the game. He talked bout his role in the NBA and with the Clippers, his new head coach Doc Rivers, plus advice for upcoming athletes.

The New York Knicks may not have a winning record, but they do play in the Eastern Conference were every team seems to have a chance of making the playoffs. At 13-22 you would think they would call this season a wash, but with the new year comes a new mindset. The Knicks have won 4 of the last five games in January. We caught up their superstar Carmelo Anthony in Dallas to hear what he thinks about the Knicks turning the corner.

This week the Celtics, Thunder and Grizzlies made an under the radar deal. The big deal in the NBA was the Bulls/Cavs swap, but I think this could be beneficial for all teams involved.

NBA: Doc Rivers “Not Surprised” By Mavericks Success

Mavericks this season. Photo credit NBA

Doc Rivers knows basketball. I believe that is safe to say. Not only has he been an NBA coach since 1999, won a championship in 2008, but he also played 13 years in the league. When I asked him about how the Dallas Mavericks have been able to have a winning record with yet another new roster, Doc says we should not be surprised at all.
