NBA: Doc Rivers “Not Surprised” By Mavericks Success

Doc Rivers knows basketball. I believe that is safe to say. Not only has he been an NBA coach since 1999, won a championship in 2008, but he also played 13 years in the league. When I asked him about how the Dallas Mavericks have been able to have a winning record with yet another new roster, Doc says we should not be surprised at all.

“Rick’s a terrific coach, so I’m not surprised. The stay have that big guy from Germany. He’s pretty good!”

He also was asked by other media to compare Dirk to other power forwards in the league, but he declined to give Dirk any number other than that he is up there with the best.

“When you have a player like that”, continued Rivers, “you can put a lot of people around him and they’re going to be better.”

New Mavs additions Monta Ellis and Jose Calderon are arguably having their best seasons ever.

“Thats the effect of a Dirk on your team. I bet Monta has never seen open shots that he has seen when you come off a pick and roll with Dirk setting it. So, he does make you better.”

Rivers also talked about the veterans like Shawn Marion and Vince Carter.

“They still have a lot of veterans who have a lot of pride and who know how to play the game. You put that with Rick...not surprised.”

Doc may be modest, but his influence has had the same effect on his new team. I spoke with Jamal Crawford who confirmed that Rivers has a better influence on the team than last year.
