The Nationals and Max Scherzer have agreed to a seven year, $210 million deal, with half of that money deferred.
Here is how this deal breaks down, he will receiver $105 million from the years 2015-2021and then get another $105 million from the years 2022-2028.
Anyway you slice it, this is one whale of a payday by a pitcher who has pitched at the top of his game for quite a while now. He did win the 2013 AL Cy Young award after the brilliant season he put together.
His patience in finding the right team and deal did payoff. As you recall, Scherzer was offered a contract by the Tigers last spring in which was also for seven years bu it was $66 million less than what the Nationals offered to him.
Now some might say what is the difference when dealing with so much money but this type of deal for him might be the best one he can get of his career and he may never see or command a kind of payday like this again. No shame in wanting to make as much money as possible when you are in your prime as Scherzer is.
The former Tiger has built quite the career so far. Not only doe she have the Cy Young award to have in his back pocket but also touts a career record of 91-58 with a 3.58 ERA in his seven seasons.
You can see why the Nationals wanted to add him to what is already a stellar starting rotation with the likes of Stephen Straburg, Jordan Zimmerman, Doug Fister and Gio Gonzalez.
That is a starting five that can help this franchise get past its postseason troubles and make a serious run at the World Series.
