Kansas State fouled Texas Southern's Tonnie Collier on a three-pointer with 3.8 seconds left. Collier made the first two free throws, then missed the third, allowing the Tigers to get the put-back and tie the game up. This gave K-State a chance to inbound the ball with 0.9 seconds remaining and throw up a desperation heave to avoid overtime. However, the Wildcats threw the ball out of bounds untouched on the inbound pass, giving the Tigers a chance to win it from its own end. TSU's Jason Carter got the inbound pass and scored in the paint as time expired to win the game giving the Tigers their second win over 2014 NCAA tournament teams in eight days. Texas Southern beat then-No. 25 Michigan State 71-64 on Dec. 20.
Thomas and Gibbs scored 15 apiece for Texas Southern. Marcus Foster scored 17 points and three assists, Nino Williams added 11 points and five rebounds for K. State, which darted out to a 9-0 lead in the first 4 minutes. For the majority of the first half it was all Wildcats, led by Foster and his trio of three pointers.
After making 2 of 9 shots to start the game, TSU trailed by as many as 11 before closing the first half with an 8-3 run. The Tigers trailed 31-23 at halftime.
A three-point play by Thomas with 17:32 to play gave the Tigers their first lead of the game, 28-27.
Prior to Sunday’s game, The Wildcats had won 38 straight home games during the month of December dating back to 2004.
TSU is now 1-1 on the season against Big 12 opponents. The Tigers lost to Baylor back on Dec. 1. Texas Southern's 3-9 record includes a pair of wins over #25 Michigan State & Kansas State not to mention a one point loss at Auburn.
Jeffrey Simmons made a layup with 17:49 left, pulling Mississippi Valley State (1-11) within five, 44-39. But Stiggers scored five-straight points to spark a decisive 27-7 run which gave Houston a 25-point lead with 4:51 remaining. Stiggers scored 14 points during that stretch, including four three pointers.
