Here is the official statement from Doug Marrone on the change at quarterback:
"Kyle Orton is our starting quarterback right now."
Marrone would not commit Orton as the starter for the rest of the season, only for this upcoming week's game. This was a decision he said that is in the best interests of the team moving forward and aid in making a long term decision at that position.
Orton signed a two year, $11million dollar deal with Buffalo this past August. The amount of money given to him was a clear sign that they were not too sure about having Manuel start for the entire season for them without trying someone else out first. The move today confirms that thought and now it is a matter of can Orton take this opportunity and run with it and get the Bills back on track before they dig their hole any deeper.
Manuel struggled yesterday against that Texans defense as he could not throw with any consistency. He threw two interceptions, including one to J.J. Watt that was returned for a pick six and was the game changer for Houston. The former first round pick for the Bills has thrown five touchdowns and thrown three interceptions so far this season.
Manuel is still a young player trying to find his way in this league. A seat on the bench might not be such a bad thing for him. He will be able to look and watch the game from a different view, maybe learn something's to add to his game. This is not the end for Manuel in Buffalo, just a bump in the road of his progression.
