It's Good to be Old School

If  hindsight is 20/20, The Carolina Panthers can see clearly now.  That is clearly see the back of Steve Smith's Jersey.  Clearly management for the Panthers could be second guessing their foresight.  Steve Smith, now with the Baltimore Ravens, was a forgotten blip on many NFL fans radar as season started.

The 74% of teams in Fantasy Leagues left him on the market as he dawned Sr. on his new jersey. After a loss to what is now in Week 4 an undefeated Bengals team, most fans and writers wrote him off again even though he was the top receiver.

The only person who didn't forget about Steve Smith, was Steve Smith. I will even admit that after his Week 2 performance against Pittsburgh, with 71 yards, I thought "Age" had found "Senior". But I did add him to my "Watch List".

After an impressive Week 3 performance crossing the century mark in receiving yards, Smith became a member of my Fantasy Team, putting up almost 25 points in a rout of his former team the Carolina Panthers in Week 4.

Now the term "Senior" has taken on a different meaning.  No longer does it signal early bird specials and half price coffee, Steve Smith has taken the term "Senior" and turned it into a phrase as cool as "Old School".

What is a senior? Those cool kids that run the high school and get to leave early. A wise grandparent that seems to have all the answers, as you struggle to keep your family together.  An athlete that has become seasoned and experienced. Brian Urlacher could command a defense and almost read a play coming out of the huddle. Marvin Harrison became one of the best route runners and a cornerback's nightmare. Troy Polamalu jumping snap counts like a 4 year old on a Couch ("Memphis, Stop Jumping on the Couch"). Randy Johnson throwing K's like a "Mound Ninja".

Let's not forget "The Nolan Ryan Express" and this uppercuts and 100+ mph Gas. The Great Satchel Paige, who pitched through the integration of baseball and through both leagues. Placing numbers in the MLB well past 45 years old.

As the journalist report "The Old Man does it again!" Years working at the same skill develops a set of mental skills that no young person can find, no matter how much pure talent they hold.  Knowledge is power and wisdom comes with age, add great health to that and you have Steve Smith Sr.

So, I say "It's Good to Be Old School", especially when it gets me another win in my Fantasy League!!
