Considered by some to be the best defensive player in the NFL this season, San Francisco 49er's inside linebacker NaVarro Bowman was having a dream season for any defensive player, and that season ended in the worst possible way, a gruesome injury and an upsetting loss to their NFC West rival, the Seattle Seahawks.
Bowman went down after Jermaine Kearse landed on his knee, bending it in a very unnatural direction while Bowman stripped Kearse of the football, tearing his ACL and MCL. The All-Pro linebacker will now have to miss the Pro Bowl, although it hasn't been announced who will be replacing him. Bowman earned himself a spot on the roster by finishing the season with a very impressive stat line of 145 tackles, 2 INT's, returning one 89 yards for a TD, 9 pass defenses, 5 sacks and 4 forced fumbles.
According to NFL Insider Ian Rapoport, "Bowman's injury isn't as babd as originally feared and that there is hope that he'll be ready for the start of the 2014 season." As expected, this was a devastating ending to a terrific season, he's unquestionably a candidate for the Defensive Player of Year award. It will be interesting to see how well Bowman can recover from reconstructive knee surgery this offseason and perform next season.
Side Note: According to rumors, Seahawks fan(s) dumped popcorn on Bowman as he was being carted off the field, in which Seattle's most outspoken player Richard Sherman came to Bowman's defense saying "If it's true, it's beyond terrible. That's as low as it gets" and going on to say he's "a great player who plays the game the right way" and also said that when Bowman went down, he "got on his knee and prayed."
