We all saw it, but didn’t see it coming. Early in the second quarter, little 5-9 180 pound receiver crushed New England’s big, physical corner. Wes Welker came off his route, lowered his shoulder, and whacked New England’s Aqib Talib. Talib injured his knee, and had to sit out the rest of Sunday’s game.
When asked Bill Belichick said “It was one of the worst plays I’ve ever seen” and a “deliberate play by the receiver to take out Aqib. No attempt to get open.”
Bill has to remember that his offense is one of the best at setting picks on corners. Welker and John Fox calmly told the media it was unintentional, and clean. These types of plays are raising much questioning about the rule.
The rule is:
"If the contact occurs as ball is being touched, there is no offensive pass interference. When it happens all at the same time -- the ball being touched and contact elsewhere -- it is not a foul. The contact has to be clearly before the ball is touched for it to draw a flag.”
