After weeks of taunting back and forth between Floyd “Money” Mayweather and Manny “Pac Man” Pacquiao it seems like it could come true.
First, Mayweather taunted Pacquiao via Instagram. Reminding everyone that Manny was knocked out in December 2012 by Juan Manuel Marquez in their fourth meeting since May of 2004. Then, Manny Pacquiao was in a Foot Locker commercial mocking Mayweather’s inaction to agree to a fight. (http://youtu.be/wS8WJ6Lz1AU) The recent social media back and forth is truly a thing of the times. Can you imagine Twitter for Tyson vs Holyfield or Ali vs Frazier?
There are many financial variables that are at play for this fight to actually come to fruition. Many of these issues are what plague these rivals from actually meeting in the ring in the past. Manny Pacquiao is under contract with HBO and Floyd Mayweather is with Showtime.
The two companies have done a joint pay-per-view once in the past for the Mike Tyson of Showtime versus Lennox Lewis of HBO. At the time it was the highest-grossing pay-per-view event in history with a staggering $106.9 million generated in pay-per-view revenue alone.
The Mayweather vs Pacquiao fight should surpass that record and the current record holding fight that was between Mayweather and Oscar De La Hoya in May of 2007.
The dividing of the purse is a whole other issue in itself. Pacquiao previously wanted $40 million to get into the ring with Mayweather. After Manny’s 2 loses, one against Marquez and the other against Timothy Bradley in June of 2012, he may not be getting the type of money he hopes for.
The true elephant in the room is that the sport of boxing needs this fight more than these fighters do. The UFC and Mixed Martial Arts in general has taken the drivers seat in the fighting world in the last decade.
Major players like Mayweather and Pacquiao have hovered around 1 million pay-per-view purchases and sometimes just shy of that mark here of late.
A great showing between these two titans could be just what boxing needs to regain its prominence in the sporting world. As promising as things are looking, I will still hold my breath to actually see a Cinco De Mayweather fight between these two.
