Russell Wilson's New Contract Might Not Materialize

Though it was almost a forgone conclusion by fans and media that Wilson would be given a new deal, so far that has yet to be the case in this off season.

People in the NFL thought he would get easily a contract that paid him $20 million a year or so, joining the elite quarterbacks in that regard. Wilson may eventually get a deal like that but for Seattle at the present time, they have larger priorities to worry about dealing with and getting resolved before they focus on Wilson's new contract and its terms. The possibility of him playing out his rookie deal is looking very high as of right now.

The Seahawks have a myriad of tasks to deal with in shaping this roster for next season.  At the top of that list seemingly is running back Marshawn Lynch who is due a new contract. He will command a fairly pricy salary that will impact the salary cap for the team and also the wiggle room that the franchise has to store for Wilson and his eventual new deal.

Their are also other players that they must deal with and see how they fit into the equation for this upcoming season.  That is what is great about still having that last year left on Wilson's rookie deal, can still play that option out and be able to give him a contract that is fair to him without as much constraints on the salary cap to deal with.

Russell Wilson is also no ordinary quarterback. He is all about the team and doing whatever it takes to put them in position to win. There is no ego with how wanting attention or commanding this amount of money etc.

He is wired to just continue to focus on football & not get caught up in the numbers and language of a contract. He is very savory when it comes to the business side of football and knows that he has leverage in this situation.

He has many options as well, including to play out his rookie deal in full and see if the Seahawks will pay him off next off season with a lavish deal, a la what Joe Flacco did in Baltimore and was eventually rewarded handsomely for his work.

However this situation plays out, you can count on Wilson leading the Seahawks for many more years and possibly adding more Super Bowl titles along the way.
