DeSoto Coach Mathis "I am still the head coach at DeSoto"

Coach Claude Mathis is still at DeSoto

Rumors began to circulate early Tuesday morning that Desoto Eagles head coach Claude Mathis was leaving the football powerhouse to join the new staff at SMU. Mathis says, "I am still the head coach at DeSoto".

New SMU head coach Chad Morris did visit Mathis on Tuesday to discuss him possibly joining his staff. That conversation has led to a multitude of speculation and phone calls.
"Everyone has been calling me", says Mathis. "But nothing is official"
This is not the first time that he has been courted by a college football coach. In 2012, he was hired by Tony Levine, then head coach of the University of Houston, as a running back coach. He returned to DeSoto two months later to remain the head coach and does not want a situation like that to happen again.

Mathis finds himself in a precarious situation in his sixth season with the school. He admitted that it doesn't sit well with him to not be preparing for a game over the Thanksgiving Holiday due to a second round exit to Allen. Although frustrated with losing to Allen for a third time, he will not back down to any challenge.

In our short talk, he did admit that he has met with his players to talk about the rumors of him leaving.
"I had to make sure that my kids understood what was going on and situation at hand. I had to make sure they understand that I am still the head coach of Desoto."
He gave no timetable regarding any decision at this time.
