According to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, The Mets have agreed to a three year contract extension with General Manager Sandy Alderson, locking him up for the foreseeable future for the franchise.

Alderson, 66, started his work back with the Mets in 2010 when he was hired as their new general manager to try and steer them to being back to playoff contenders, rebuild the farm system from the ground up and have  a plan for long term, sustained success for the franchise.

Though he has not returned the team to being playoff contenders yet & has not established long term success for the organization, its hard to overlook the work he has done in the minor leagues, especially when it comes to their young pitching.

You take a look at what the Met shave on hand and what is coming in the future in terms of pitching and it will even make the most cynical of Mets fans crack a smile and develop some hope for their team.  He has assembled during his time in Flushing a core rotation of Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom, Zach Wheeler and another future rotation piece in Noah Syndergaard. This has the makings of a rotation that can be one of the tops in all of baseball in future years if they can all stay healthy and pitch up to their potential.

Now their is reason for people to be justified in not being happy with the lack of progress the team has made under his watch. Win totals of 77,74,77 and 76 would be of concern to any organization let alone one that resides in the biggest baseball town in the country. He inability to bring in quality free agents also is a concern that will not go away but can be changed with just one big signing working out for the team.

One must look back though at what Alderson was left with once he came on board, not  a great amount of talent either on the big club level or minor leagues. He really had to rebuild this organization from scratch and that is a process that is not an overnight job, it can take years to accomplish like it is taking with the Mets.

With this extension, it has brought stability and a chance for Alderson and his baseball people to continue to do their work and bring the Mets to finally being  a legitimate playoff contender year in and year out.
