Before departing the game, starter David Phelps yielded the first two hits of that inning. Jason Kipnis ground ball up the middle off Thornton’s glove allowed the inning to continue and for the damage to continue against New York.
Cleveland went on to score an additional five runs in the 8th inning to break the game wide open. Roberto Perez belted his first Major League home run, a two run shot just over the yellow line marker in left field. The play was reviewed in New York and ruled a home run. Carlos Santana also went deep for a two run shot off Jim Miller into the right field seats. A total disaster of an inning for the Yankees in every way possible
The Yankees started out well as they took a 2-0 lead in the 4th inning as Zelous Wheeler wrapped a towering shot just inside the foul pole for a two run homer.
New York  would then add a run in the 5th inning when Yangervis Solarte singled through the hole into the left field bringing Francisco Cervelli in from second base to make the score 3-0. However, the Yankees failed twice to score with the bases loaded and ended up leaving 11 men on base in the game.
Phelps pitched a strong game going six innings, giving up two runs on seven hits while striking out five.
Unfortunately, the bullpen could not hold up their end as Thornton surrendered two runs on two hits while Jim Miller was rocked for five runs on six hits.
New York reached a few milestones in the game. Derek Jeter notched his 1,000 career multi-hit game with a single to center field in the sixth inning. Meanwhile, Ichiro Suzuki pinch hit single in the 8th inning was his 2,800 career hit.
During the game, New York received sobering news as Masahiro Tanaka was diagnosed with a partial tear of his UCL in his pitching elbow which will land him on the shelf for six weeks. Tanaka has seen three doctors who have recommended rest and rehabilitation at this juncture while holding off on Tommy John surgery.
Cervelli took a pitch off his right knee cap but was able to walk off the injury. Jeter took a sharp line drive off his left wrist in the 8th inning.
New York split the four game series with Cleveland. Their record stands at 5-3 on the road trip. The Yankees finish up with a three game series in Baltimore before heading into the All-Star break. Jeter was honored in a pre-game ceremony by the Indians.
