The Mash unit known as the New York Yankees continues to be snake bitten by bad injury news. Just as both Mark Teixeira and Michael Pineda were trying to work back from their injuries, they were unfortunately stopped in their tracks as both have suffered setbacks that will further delay their goal of becoming 100% healthy playing wise.

Mark Teixeira left saturday’s game vs the Twins with soreness in his right wrist. The treatment that the Yankees prescribed for him was a cortisone shot. He rested today and will do the same tomorrow before being reevaluated by medical staff on Tuesday. This is the wrist the Teixeira had to have surgery on and missed a majority of last season as a result. The soreness once again came up and effected him earlier this week and forced him to miss out on playing in three games for New York. The only real silver lining in all this bad news for Teixeira is that he saw a doctor this past Thursday and that there was no structural damage to that wrist, just inflammation. Teixiera was batting .242 with 9 home runs and 25 RBIs at the time of this latest bout of inflammation.
A wrist injury can be very tricky to play through, as Teixeira is experiencing right now, with the pain from it coming and going at anytime it seems like. It can require intense treatment depending on the severity of the inflammation. You admire his will to want to play through this injury but it is delaying his wrist from completely healing up and being pain free for him to play everyday in games. Its an injury that can linger for a long time without it getting regular rest. Its a dilemma that Teixeira and the Yankees organization will have to battle through for the foreseeable future
As for Michael Pineda he has been completely shut down from any baseball activity with inflammation in his upper back and shoulder. The 24 year old pitcher is currently on the disabled list for a muscle strain in that exact same area unfortunately. Pineda had pitched in an extended spring training game earlier in the week and was on track to pitch in another one today. That plan went by the boards with the news of him feeling soreness while playing catch. He was targeted to have returned to the big club by mid June. That is now completely up in the air as of right now.
This setback just adds to what has been a rollercoaster of a season for Pineda so far. When he was healthy and on the mound he was terrific for the Yankees. Pineda posted a 2-2 record with a dazzling 1.83 ERA in the four games he started before he got injured. Then he stupidly got caught with par tar and was suspended for ten games last month. Then another piece of adversity hit him when he hurt himself during a simulated game he was involved in while serving his ten game suspension. Who knows when he will return but it is safe to say that Pineda will be looking for brighter days ahead in his career after this latest injury is able to heal up for him.
The Yankees are adding these two to a list of injuries that seems like a mile long. They are already without the services of Carlos Beltran, CC Sabathia, Francisco Cervelli and Shawn Kelley. The Yankees currently sit at 29-26 on the season.
