MLB: Gerrit Cole Impresses in Debut

On Tuesday night Gerrit Cole, the #1 prospect in the Pittsburgh Pirates organisation, took the mound for his first major league start.

As with all top prospect debuts, there was a sense of excitement in the air, as well as the fear that it could all go wrong. Luckily for the Pirates, Cole justified the hype.

In an 8-2 win, Cole went 6 1/3 innings while only giving up 2 earned runs on 7 hits. Displaying composure and an impressive group of pitches will have left the organisation and fans alike sure that Cole is the future of the Pirates rotation.

The big question is how long will it take Cole to develop into the ace that many expect him to be, its unlikely to happen as fast as it did for Matt Harvey, but I expect him to have a similar impact to what Jose Fernandez has had with the Miami Marlins.

A low ERA while showcasing his potential is nothing to scoff at, and with the Pirates well in contention in the national league, an above average showing from Cole could be what pushes them over the top, especially with Jeff Locke pitching as well as he is at the moment.
