Tampa Bay Rays in talks with Manny Ramirez, Johnny Damon; Texas Rangers out on the deal

Media in Dallas have been monitoring the Manny Ramirez deal closely. Texas Rangers GM Jon Daniels made comments during Fan Fest yesterday that they were looking to add another veteran bat to the lineup. The assumption around the local media was Manny Ramirez. Fresh off surgery and ready to prove his worth, Manny has been in talks with several teams around the league. Rumors of him going to the AL West Angels have cooled down with the signing of OF Vernon Wells, a local Arlington product. Reports have now stated that a deal has been reached between the Tampa Bay Rays, Manny Ramirez and ex-teammate Johnny Damon. ESPN.com has the story here:

The Rangers need to realize what got them to their first World Series in franchise history... pitching. The philosophy to load the lineup with power hitters has not worked in the past, although it did provide some high scoring losses. GM Jon Daniels and team president Nolan Ryan seem to be stacking the deck for another mid-season trade for a ace pitcher rental.

Cowboys still searching for defensive coordinator; Pasqualoni hired by UCONN and Manusky courted by Chargers

Jason Garrett's search for a new defensive coordinator is getting harder. After interviewing 49ers DC Greg Manusky, he meets with the upper brass of the San Diego Chargers. Many people assume that this will be a more attractive position with the volatility of Norv Turner as a head coach. Garrett is locked up for the next four years as head coach, or at least three in Jerry terms.

Interim defensive coordinator Paul Pasqualoni was announced as the new head coach for Big East winner UCONN. You can read Jason Garrett's and Jerry Jones' comments here.

This will be the first big decision for the new head coach and the most important one. The defense took a big decline from last season, even getting its architect fired in the process. The personnel needs changes and even scheme changes may be in order.

Roddy Beaubois Exclusive: When are you coming back?

Antonio Cromartie calls out Tom Brady; "He's an ass****"

With the playoff showdown set, Jets vs Pats III, the trash talk has been flying back and forth. Coach Rex Ryan started his banter even before the Colts game saying nobody studies film like Peyton Manning, not even Tom Brady though he would like to think so.
Bill Belichek, as always, has asked his team to adopt his stoic demeanor this week when baited by the press or the opposing team for headline fodder. Today things took a slight turn for the worst when Jets CB Antonio Cromartie shared his thoughts on Pats QB Tom Brady. When asked to describe him in a word, he used "asshole". He went on to say, "That's what I think about him. I don't really give a damn about him...I don't have to play against him. I play against the receivers."
Tom Brady's response, "I've been called worse. I'm sure there is a long list of people that feel that way."
Cromartie added that he hopes Brady throws the ball his way on Sunday. "I hope so, I really do. I hope he throws the ball 10 times my way -- more chances to make him pay."

Auburn's Nick Fairley the real winner from BCS Championship Game

The big winner from last night's BCS Championship may have been Auburn DL Nick Fairley. After an impressive performance against the high powered Oregon offense, Fairley may have solidified the #1 pick in the upcoming NFL draft. A big performance in last year's Big 12 Championship catapulted Ndamakong Suh to the #2 pick after Sam Bradford. The 2-14 Carolina Panthers have the first pick in the upcoming. They just hired San Diego defensive coordinator Ron Rivera as the new head coach. If Andrew Luck does stay at Stanford, no doubt the new coach will be looking to improve the defense.

JORDAN JEFFERSON INTERVIEW

LSU POST GAME PRESS CONFERENCE

2011 AT&T Cotton Bowl (3rd Quarter Report) 35-17

LSU opens up with more of the same. Jordan Jefferson beats the Aggie defense with his feet for a 35yd scamper. Follows that up with a another TD pass to Toliver, his 3rd. Jefferson making an early case for MOP.

QB Tennehill fails to see another rushing LSU LB and takes a big sack to give the ball back to a hot Tiger offense.

Aggie defense holds up. LSU misses a FG. 35-17

Only 7pts scored in the 3rd, lowest quarter in the game so far.

2011 AT&T Cotton Bowl (2nd Quarter Report) 28-17

Aggies start off the quarter missing a long FG try hitting the bottom post. LSU Tigers answer back, running the ball well. QB Jefferson is starting to see the running lanes the Aggie defense is allowing. He rushes for a TD on QB bootlegg after a Les Myles challenge to put the Tigers up 14-10.

Cyrus Gray, who is having a big night rushing, throws a TD on a halfback pass to Nwachukwu, his second of the game. 14-17

Les Myles and the LSU coaching staff is starting to push the running plays on a lethargic linebacker core of the Aggies. Von Miller has only 3 tackles in the first half. Spencer Ware, LSU RB, gets the Tigers in the red zone. Newly eligible running back Stevan Ridley takes a counter sweep 17yds for another LSU TD. Tiger fans can thank the NCAA for that one. 21-17

Tennenhill throws his first pick on a miscommunication with WR Frederick, giving the ball back to LSU.

Tennenhill threw another on their next position giving the Tigers the ball back right before the 2 minute mark. Jefferson uses his legs again to get the Tigers to the 2yd line and hits Toliver for his second TD. Jefferson had only 4 passing TDs all year and has 2 tonight. 28-17

Both offenses are moving the ball well on the ground and air, but both defenses are not getting key stops. Its gonna come down to which defense tightens up in the second half.

2011 AT&T Cotton Bowl (1st Quarter Report) 10-7

Things started off well for the Aggies with a big return on the opening kickoff by Judie. The short field earned them the first score of the game, a 17yd pass to Nwachukwu. QB Tennehill was 3-3 on the opening drive. LSU's first possession was a 3 and out, until a roughing the punter call gave them a new life. After moving the ball a bit, Jefferson threw the first turnover. A one-handed pick by Judie.
Aggies took over on the 1yd line. Cyrus Gray drives the Aggies down to a FG to go up 10-0. He has 50yds on 7 carries for the first quarter.
LSU would finally answer back with a long 42yd TD throw by Jefferson to Toliver. A great finger tip grab by Tolliver splitting two Aggie defenders. 10-7

No Dirk for Mavs Against Thunder; Longest time out in his career.

You would think with a team like OKC coming into to town, Caron Butler out for the year, and missing 5 straight games even Dirk would stand-up and say "Play Me". But no. The "Big German" will miss his 6th straight game, the longest consecutive miss streak in his career.
It's now up to Chandler, Mahinmi, and Haywood to keep Durant from hitting maybe 50. The Mavs are however coming off back-to-back wins without Dirk and Caron. Tonight will be a big test for this team.

Introducing, Jason Garrett...Dallas Cowboys Head Coach

ESPNDalllas.com story here!

Big Trouble in Big D; Caron Butler out for the season, Dirk missed his 5th straight game

Today Caron Butler had season ending surgery to repair a torn patellar tendon in his knee. His last full game with the team he hit 30pts in a loss to the Spurs at home. On the road against the Milwaukee Bucks you can hear him screaming in pain when he hit the knee in the first quarter. You knew then, it was not gonna be good.
Dirk missed his 5th straight game tonight against the Portland Trailblazers, a win by the way. But they have Oklahoma City and Orlando coming up, so will they rush Dirk back? The "Big German" has been a quick healer. The Mavs are only 3 games ahead of the Lakers and Utah right now. The biggest concern has to be falling further behind the Spurs in the division and the conference.
Who will step up now? That is the million dollar question for this team. Deshawn Stevenson had 21pts against the Cavaliers and 18pts tonight. JJ Barea hit 29pts in the loss to the Bucks. Tyson Chandler has back-to-back double doubles in rebounds and points. Jet Terry has been a 4th quarter savior in previous games, but is still inconsistent as a 2nd scoring option. Roddy B has not step a foot on the AAC floor this season and the rookie Jones unproven. This team needs a certified second option. The collective effort is good to make the playoffs, but once there, teams will again focus on Dirk and dare the team to beat them. A strategy that has worked the last 3 seasons.
Is a trade the only option? If Mark Cuban loves anything, he loves the Mavs. Say what you will, but no other owner will "spend-to-win" with no disregard for his personal finances the way Cuban does. The trade is inevitable. Mark has to be on the phone with Denver right? How attractive does Carmelo look now? Every player outside of Nowitzki, Kidd, and Chandler has to be on the table. Caron's contract is up at the end of the season, Kidd is not getting any younger, and Dirk keeps reminding us he is here for only 4 more seasons. The time to trade is now.
The Mavs were our #1 ranked team in our power rankings before the injury bugs infested the locker room. The team was starting to really gel has a title contender beating good teams like Miami twice, San Antonio, Denver, New Orleans, and even Boston. You could take a wait-and-see approach, but why? If the trade is out there...make it.

Cowboys vs Eagles: Jerry says everyone is under evaluation today; Garrett not head coach next year

Ft Worth Star Telegram reported that Jason Garrett will be the head coach next year. Not true. Owner Jerry Jones commented today that despite reports nobody has been hired as the head coach for next season. He went on to add that everyone will be under evaluation in today's game against division opponent and Vick-less Eagles.
Based on our intel, this is still any one's job. Garrett at best will end the season with a 5-3 record. This is not good enough in Jerry's eyes. If he loses this game, a 4-4 record will put all chances of Garrett coaching in Dallas to zero.

Caron Butler could be out for the season; ESPNDallas.com Reporting

After going out in the first quarter, Mavs fans knew Caron's return did not look good. ESPNDallas.com reporter Tim MacMahon is reporting that Butler could be out the rest of season or at best 2 months. It could be a slight tear of the patellar tendon or full tear.
Dirk is still listed day-to-day with his sore knee and has missed 3 straight games, all loses. Shawn Marion did not play last night due to a thigh contusion and is still probable.

2011 TicketCity Bowl 3rd Qtr (Tech 38 - NU 24)

Check out our full game wrap-up tonight's show 9:30pm blogtalkradio.com/rfsports

2011 TicketCity Bowl Halftime (Tech 24 - NU 6)

Northwestern finally found its offense in the 2nd quarter on TD run from quarterback Kain Colter. He is also the teams leading rusher so far. Special teams has been the problem for the Cats, missing the extra point and giving the Red Raiders a short field.

Tech's offense, led by QB Potts, erupted in the second quarter. Potts caught a TD and threw for another in the quarter. He is 26 for 33, 243yd passing with no turnovers and making a strong case for MOP.

2011 TicketCity Bowl 1st Qtr (Tech 10 - NU 0)

Tech's offense has been as expected, all pass. The defense has been the big suprise, holding NU to only 1 first down on 41yds total offense. NU's special teams has been hurting the team giving Tech a short field after every punt. The games only TD was a pass from Potts to Zouzalik, his second TD of the season.

NU has to start moving the ball. They are running effectively, but have not crossed the 50yd line.

Texas Tech 10
Northwestern 0
